View Full Version : Horeshoe Pass
Anyone there today, loads of bikes out, such a sooperb day for bikes. Police were out in force though, they were handing out leeflets re safety, bit of a chiller, they said they has been 8 fatalies in 11 days around that area. Certainly makes you think!

The yellow beast is my new pride & joy
EvoBarry 14 July 2003, 13:12 I went through Llangollen but didn't bother with the Pass, I was heading for Bala etc, less traffic [:)]
Plenty bikes out in Wales yesterday, which was nice.
mutant_matt 15 July 2003, 08:44 I always like to do Horseshoe Pass whenever I'm in North Wales though I've never gone through there when there have been any other bikes about!
Great part of the world! Any locals want to share any top roads in the region that I should pay a visit to next time I'm up? ;):) (preferably, B-roads with little traffic and no cops...;):):))
Matt :)
The Cat and Fiddle......
Every biker should ride that road at least once... :0)
Totally agree, that's this sunday's trip
NotoriousREV 15 July 2003, 13:24 The Horseshoe pass is excellent, but be careful, my first time up there I nearly crashed 4 times in 5 corners (mud on the road, distracted by a wreath tied to a tree, cattle grid, raining half way round the corner  )
mutant_matt 15 July 2003, 13:33 I've done it many times, once in the pissing rain and I can see how it could be dodgy riding at "normal" pace in the rain - we were riding like grannies however at this point due to what's on your right as you go up....;);)
Mogsi, I've heard of that plenty of times but don't actually know where it is?
Matt :)
NotoriousREV 15 July 2003, 14:02 Depends which way you're going, if you're going from the Ponderosa end towards the "horseshoe", there's a right hander just after a blind crest. Go too fast and you won't land for about 5 minutes :D
mutant_matt 15 July 2003, 15:58 I meant up from Llangollen. LOL @ 5 minutes...
NotoriousREV 16 July 2003, 10:04 Matt, Cat and Fiddle is between Macclesfield and Bakewell, fantastic road, but now quite heavily policed and a 50mph limit. The bit up from Macc to the pub is very twisty, then it turns into a scary fast bit of road, you can see for miles and the temptation to get on the gas is very strong.

Cat and Fiddle is the Macc - Buxton road A537
Enjoy............

NotoriousREV 16 July 2003, 11:08 ay, Buxton, not Bakewell.
Also worth heading for Matlock too, gazillions of bikers in summer.
EvoBarry 16 July 2003, 11:11 If your on the A537, I can recommend taking the A54 down to Congleton for a challenge, seems to be less plod too.
It's the first right turn after the Cat Pub as you head for Buxton if you didn't already know :)
brickboy 16 July 2003, 12:26 Congleton road is a great one, some pretty scary blind crests and corners tho' :D
mutant_matt 16 July 2003, 13:15 Thanks guys :)
I don't really go to Bike meets because a) when I'm on my Bike, I just want to ride it and b) where there is a Bike meet, there is usually loads of Police both on the way, and once you get there.
I've heard for years that the Cat & Fiddle is a top road but it sounds like it's been a victim of it's own popularity? I'll have to stick to the unknown great B-roads that I use instead..;);)
Matt :)
Zanlin 16 July 2003, 13:27 A bunch of us spent a really good long weekend in the Matlock Bath area in the spring.
We did the Cat & Fiddle (gently) and picked up a police helicopter for about 20 minutes. Must have been bored.
We also went to Congleton and yes, its quite challenging. I do remember one tight blind right hander, over the top of a hill with a low wall on the left and a steep fifty foot drop beyond. As I thought to myself 'be very careful', a gap appeared in the wall. It was car width and had a couple of black lines leading to it . . .

Ducati 996 17 July 2003, 11:14 Cat & Fiddle, one of my local haunts, but don't tend to ride it much now, too much FED action, there are plenty of other roads around it, which are as good, if not better IMO, and don't have the same amount of attention either
mutant_matt 17 July 2003, 18:54 ...but like the sensible chap you are, you're keeping schtum about where they are for the road's own good? ;);):D:D
Matt :)
