View Full Version : I am on my way to being a biker !!!!

Passed my motorcycle theory today !

100 % (35 out of 35) on the questions and 65 out of 75 on the hazard perception, so quite chuffed considering i have been driving 14 years. They told me they rarely see over 60 so I feel like my skills must be ok for bike ownership but must not get cocky, I think the right attitude to bikes is the key to staying alive, having seen so many injuries from idiot behaviour I see no other way, even if you behave you are at risk so I will be a sensible biker (GSXR head horns notwithstanding !!!)

CBT on Monday (have passed before so shouldnt be a problem) and thats two out of three, then the biggy, the practical, what are your experiences of this, going to go for direct access and then get a proper bike. Big deal for me this as money is an issue (3 kids etc) so the quicker I do it the cheaper it is.

Finally got my scrapper Suzuki GS 125 running last night after much work, rode it up and down the cul de sac we live in with all the kids chasing, felt a right plonker but very excited (about the bike , not the kids....) already feels very slow.

Somebody at work just got a Mitsi 3000 GT, funny how a CBR 600 would murder it ! maybe even a GS 500 ?

Anyone got any new biker experiencs they would care to share ?

J4CKO,
If you dont mind me asking how much are you for the whole test?

Er, havent done it all yet but, so far

Helmet 25 in Riossi closing down sale
Theory 18 quid
CBT 125
Snotty GS 125 100 quid, needs about 100 spending (going halves with my brother)

Practical Test is 47 quid, then you need tuition so about three hundred with a few hours include on a 500 to do direct access.

I reckon about a grand to do it all including clothing, depends how much you spend on your learner bike or if you get one at all.

I just passed my direct access a couple of months back, and chopped my Runner 125 in for a Bandit 600 a few days after. I would advise doing the direct access, as (for me anyway) the Honda CB500 was actually much easier to ride than the CG125 I had to endure for the first day.

As for the test itself, I was *really* nervous for it (as I was for my car test 5 years before) but one thing the instructor said to me before helped a lot. That was the fact I'm presenting a full car licence, so the examiner knows I can drive, I just have to show I can transfer those skills into riding a bike safely. That seemed to make it a bit easier, and I passed first time!

Good luck!

Chris

The bike test is much harder for women, you wouldn't want to go through that now would you! :p

one of the bike mags did a quarter mile with a gs500 vs 300bhp scooby

gs won :) :)

found the "test" much easier than the CBT. CBT is all about slow speed control. test is just riding around town, don't cock up the U-turn, do approx 26mph for the emergency stop (makes it much easier ;) ) and don't leave your indicator on :) easy as that :)

Yeah only thing i would add is don't rush your U turn, coz u can ride the rest of the test perfect but put your foot down on your U turn and you've had it. Hear speaks the voice of experience!! It's really annoying to fail on that. Now passed my test and currently riding a CCM Supermoto, i'd def suggest an unfaired bike to begin with just to get your confidence up!

Cheers for the support, just saving up the 500 quid for some proper training before I let myself loose, make no mistake I am doing this properly, with three kids I cant afford to be blase about the risks, I now have two years to get it sorted but hopefully before then, that about the GS v 300 bhp cracks me up, dorky commuter bike (not that dorky, quite nice but you get the point) versus flame spitting rally weapon, hillarious !

After the CBT I went round to a mates, well mainly a mate of my dads but I know him pretty well nowadays to share my good news, my uncle arrives on his Speed Triple (Lucifer Orange) and the he goes in the garage to choose between a Triumph 595 and his Blade, he took the blade, his third bike (another 595) is off the road as he blew it up !

Nice to see the bikes but gutting I couldnt go with them. Oh well one day.

My CBT was £85
Then the theory £18
I paid £50 for the practical (my instructor books it and charges a few extra quid)
8 lessons @ £50 each = £400 (2hour lessons)
Yamaha YZF-R6 = £4,000 (bought last Saturday, yipppeeeee !)
All in one leathers from Hein Gericke = £300
Gloves = £41
Oxtar Boots = £135
Nitro Racing Helmet = £120
Bike Lock (still not bought) = £50?
Plus yamaha insurance (third party only) = £503
So all in all, the grand total of £5,702 (A lot of cash !!!)
