Hi All

Now my lancia is finished and I am bored I thought I would start work on my Capri mark 2 3.0s that has been in storage for the last 4 years. At the moment I am trying to unseize the front calipers, remove the matt black paint from the crome and then somehow unseize the clutch.

Dont ask!!! :rolleyes: I was removing the caliper and was using the bowl to catch the fluid but as I was prizing the caliper off it fell into the oil :eek:

i think your no plate has fell off!

I was half way through removing it and thought it will be easier to finish it when I had taken the bumper off :rolleyes: One of the screws was rusted in so I will use some WD40 on it

Still looking for new calipers :(

Have you tried your local motor factor?

I got princess four pots from mine and although they were £95 each they were still the cheapest place i found.

My Ford M16 calipers i fitted to my sunbeam were siezzed solid.

I had to use a G clamp on one side of the caliper to hold the piston back then pump the brake pedal till it pushed the siezed one out. I repeated this unitl i got all four (2 per caliper) to move propperly, then i stripped them down. Re polished the pistons and bores and fitted new seals (About £5 from the MF).

The bores and pistons had some pitting on them, but as long as its all nice and clean and polished it doesnt impede operation too much.

An afternoons work and fully functioning calipers.

I had thought about refurbishing the callipers myself. I pushed the pistons out last week and they were in good condition just a bit rusty :( I will phone up and see how much the kit is then :D Are they hard to do?

If its M or P16 calipers they'll only be (i think) £5 - £10 for the kits.

Usually included new piston seals, and new dust seals (And sometimes new O rings for inside).

I split my callipers to make it easier. You just have to makesure you get the bolts nice and tight when you re-assemble. It would be good to use a torque wrench (but none are especially accurate) but the manufacturers wont give the torque settings.

Its not hard Just spend time polishing everything really well.

Be carefull if you do this as you can scratch things baddly, but i used a clean rag balled up and fitted to the end of a variable speed drill to polish the inside of the bores.

Its also a good idea to clean the exterior of the caliper using a rotary wire brush etc.

One word of advice, make sure if you use a lubriacant use either brake fluid or brake fluid compatible grease. If you use some greases / oils the affect the rubber seals and cause them to grow. It then makes it impossible to get them back together.

How do I find out what sort of callipers they are then? All I can see so far is that they are ATE callipers. Also can you get the seals from any local car shop?

I think (but will in no way be held accountable for my comment if its wrong) that its M16 calipers on your capri.

It might be stamped on the casting somewhere. Its been a while since i did mine, but i cant remeber off hand.

If you go to a Motor factors (Not halfords etc)(Always Advertise in Yellow Pages) and tell them the year and make of the car. They should be able to tell you what seal kit you need and give (or order it) for you.

I got an email the other day that confused me asking about bits. hold the brake on put it in top hold clutch down start car:D

usually works but not always

Tried that before and the engine wouldn't even turn :( I get the brakes on tonight so I will start trying to move the car then.

if you can drive anywhere quiet you could drive it a little with the clutch down that would do it

if not gearbox out :(
