Wow!
What chassis is he going to put it in?
If it runs 1500BHP I don't imagine it will last the 2 hours.

Gidney&Knowlesy 08 July 2003, 14:16 Going back into the car that won Nigel Mansell 1st place - I'll get more details though my friend has 4 Formula 1 cars from this era, Renault, Williams & 2 others (not sure as ther are in lots of bits). All will eventually be restored over the next few months; though these are the babies with massive rear tyre sections. Ther are the absolute nuts! Apparently these are the cars all F! drivers are fond of and would love to race again. I'll take some piccies of the restoration work and of course the 3 remaining engines to be rebuilt.......... The current engine revs to 13,000 rpm, what a noise! clarence 08 July 2003, 14:56 A Megatron (BMW) F1 motor in a Williams-Honda??? That is surely not right!!! johnfelstead 09 July 2003, 02:44 great engines. The megatron is an updated version of the BMW M12/13 upright version, developed by mader motorsport in Switzerland and badged Megatron, which is a USA based insurance company who bought the rights to the engine from BMW at the end of 1987. Megatron owned by USF&G Insurance were Arrows main sponsor in 1988. The BMW M12/13 uses the cast iron production block used in the BMW 316,318 and 518 designed by von Falkenhausen in 1959!! Race power on these engines was in the region of 1000BHP, but that was on Toluene rocket fuel, on pump petrol you will be significantly down on this and will have to drop the CR ratio and boost levels to survive on what is available today for historic racing. The most boost/power recorded on this engine was 5.5BAR in qualifying for Monza by Gerhard Berger in 1986, this was 1300BHP. There was a 4BAR boost limit imposed for 1987. I would think this engine will be good for about 3.7BAR and a CR of 7.5:1 giving around 800BHP on 112RON Pump Fuel. I'll get my coat. :D johnfelstead 09 July 2003, 02:48 so thats a 1988 engine rebuild, not 1983. ;) johnfelstead 09 July 2003, 02:51 P.S does your mate want a race car mechanic? i love this era of race car and could do with an interesting job. :D johnfelstead 09 July 2003, 12:32 Nice work if you can get it :D That engine still wont produce anywhere near what they used to in the mid 80's, the silly figures were all down to the fuel they ran which was specially blended by BASF for the teams. The main diference between Qualifying and race spec was the boost level, they used to bolt the waste gate shut and hope it would last 3 laps. Gidney&Knowlesy 09 July 2003, 14:55 John, I don't know anything about Formula 1 except Ferrari's are red.......... Though if you would like I can have a word and see if I can get you down to the shake down of the car, you can then speak engines all day with the owner and builder. The guy who is having it built has over 34 years of motorbike and Formula 1 engines and I'm sure you'll get an invite to see the other 3 cars as they are restored............. johnfelstead 09 July 2003, 15:12 that would be great if you could! I've spent a lot of time on similar technology race cars so it would be great to see up close. Gidney&Knowlesy 10 July 2003, 09:00 I'm seeing him Saturday will let you know then.......... johnfelstead 12 July 2003, 01:07 thanks Gidney&Knowlesy 14 July 2003, 13:00 Its a yes, just waiting for when the shell will be assembled...... johnfelstead 14 July 2003, 13:10 great stuff. :D paulpalmer 17 July 2003, 14:33 Fantastic :D I was too young to remember the turbo machines properly :( From the footage I have seen that was proper F1  thecirsch 18 July 2003, 11:16 Knowlsey You got a web-site yet?? Done a search but without any joy. Ed Gidney&Knowlesy 21 July 2003, 12:08 Currently an F1 BMW engine is being rebuilt, the cost to rebuild this will be £25k. Will get pictures and full spec shortly though everything is pretty much titanium with the pistons being 2 piece to allow oil to flow through them and keep them cool. 1 piston ring set alone is £800.00 ouch................ Gidney&Knowlesy 07 August 2003, 08:38 http://images.fotopic.net/?id=755084&outx=600&oq=0 One of my good friends has just had this little beauty rebuilt a Formula 1, 1500 cc & 1500 bhp engine with specially made Garrett Turbo (comes on boost at 7 bar). Good for 2 hours of work then needs to be rebuilt. The car is under going restoration and will soon be running around a few tracks. Now if only I could squeeze that into my Scooby....... [Edited by XtremeScoobies - 7/8/2003 8:41:01 AM] Gidney&Knowlesy 07 August 2003, 15:04 The Megatron came out of an Arrows 1988, driven by Warwick & Jeba (thank goodness for the phone......). Mate has one of each though couldn't tell which one was which as they both look the same.... Mansells car was actually the indy car, though I'll get some pictures of that engine too (when its built) [Edited by XtremeScoobies - 7/8/2003 3:12:01 PM] Gidney&Knowlesy 07 September 2003, 07:33 John <cough> a certain mechanic I know has 12 months ago finished a 5 year tour with F1, building engines for the <he told me though I can't remember as it wasn't Ferrari!!!> team.... He's rebuilding 3 more F1 engines currently for my friend though has also got many years of experience working for a Subaru appointed tuning company.....I know his busy modifying my engine right now...... LOL It should read 1998, though when I posted I had the pictures from a week earlier though had forgotten what wording went with which engine <& it was a pub conversation> I think the engine pictured was a qualifying engine, which was more tuned than a race engine as it didn't have to be reliable (well for 10-12 laps only) [Edited by XtremeScoobies - 7/9/2003 7:36:47 AM] |
