I've owned my first scoob since Friday and the engine is shagged, or at least I think it is. (sounds like big or litle ends gone)
It's a Type R.
I've just heard of Triton Motorsport near Bournemouth airport, has anyone heard of them? Are they any good? Where do Bournemouth/Poole scooby owners take their scooby's for service and repair?
I would really like some help on this one!

Meaning no-one seems to know where to service a scoob in/around Bournemouth.

 

I'd have thought scooby owners round here would have heard of them, they are in the yellow pages and right on our doorstep, I've had a scooby for four days and I've heard of them.
I'm at my wits end and highly p!ssed off and wondering what the **** I should do.
The car is under warranty so no worries there. Just wondering who I should get to carry out the repair. I don't want some spanner monkey flicking through his Haynes manual whilst trying to fix my car.

 

I have taken my cars including my 22b, to Triton for a couple of years for servicing but have not had an engine built by them. Phone 01202-571564. A good bunch of guys, at the back of the Airport. Run their own rally car. If your car is and import, only an independent will sort it. Local scooby engine builders are in short supply, also call Roger Clarke Motorsport.

 

My scoob recently died on me after wiping out two big ends and the main bearings plus pistons, conrods etc. Mine is being rebuilt by Grayharts in Chesterfield, good guys who know their stuff. They will even come and collect your car, and a standard rebuild is around £1,500. You can talk to Kev or David 01246590807 and have a chat with them.

yep, no scoob grease monkeys around here, You have to go further afield, TSL or Power engineering for reliable rebuilds. come to our monthly dorset meet, we will steer you in the right direction. s

 

Nothing wrong with triton. They build rally cars for a living (as well as working on scoobs etc) can't see a problem with them doing a rebuild.

Edit to say that they are now actively promoting the private work as bmth subaru centre (or something like that!) rather than just competition cars

Oh and it's owned by the uncle of John Piper (Chaplegate sv adviser bloke most of you know!!)

Ive had mine serviced there and they were very well priced. Not all that chatty, but they got the job done. Im sure they must be good at rebuilds as they run a number of EVO's

Optimax

 

Need an octane booster with Optimax with an STi. Or a remap to run on UK fuel. If not then it may be a reason for the piston melt. Its quite common on STi's, either from MAF failure or not high enough RON fuel. Probably teaching you to suck eggs there.

I was told that Optimax would sufice. I thought most people with imports ran their cars on super or Optimaxe alone, using octane booster from time to time or for track days.
Would remaping the car for UK fuel cause a loss in performance?

Sorry to hear the bad news.
Is the car a version 5 type R?If so these are the subaru's which generally go pop,some say due to fuel others say it is due to the engine is starved momentarily of oil via the oil pump,but when I looked into buying one no one was sure exactly what causes it to happen.There are good and bad ones.Obviously this does'nt help you now!
Have a look at a copy of jap performance car magazine,this will give you a few choices for engine rebuilders advertising.

I think most good remaps ie GEMS / Link would give you the same, if not a little more and change the ignition timing etc for a UK fuel map. If its a 99/00 model then a TEK2 or TEK3 is a good option.

In an ideal world, import the car fresh from Japan and get this done straight away. Also replace the MAF sensor and you have a solid car.

Try www.BRDevelopments.co.uk or do a search for GEMS or LINK ECU. You can use the search button above.

A lot of people use BRD. Another very good place is Power Engineering in Uxbridge. If you're having a rebuild, get this done very soon after. You can run on booster but its a bit impractical.

I spoke to Roger Clark Motorsport who are regarded as the very best in scooby knowledge, and they said a remap is not required.
I got quoted in the region of £1,400 for a link ECU.

 

I use Triton for all my scooby's needs and they are absolutely fantastic. Dont rip me off and get the job done quickly and efficiently.

I would definately recommend them.

Roger Clark Motorsport said that the big ends failing in this instance would have had nothing to do with the type of fuel used.
I'm not doubting your scooby knowledge, but Roger Clark's people really do know their onions.
I may get a remap done anyway, just to be on the safe side, but at £1,400 it won't be straight away.
The car has never been used on the track to my knowledge and had only been run on super whilst I only used optimax.

Roger Clarks are VERY good, will probably be using them again despite the 400m round trip!

Still not sure about Triton.

I have run my STi4 in mostly standard form (just the BB) on Super always, lots of optimax, some Millers for about half it's time with me, given up on the booster now. Done 3 track days, never missed a beat (touches wood) Had the car for a smidge under 4 years.

But then I'm not a scoobyhooligan like Darkie Markie!

 

I've run my MY95 WRX (currently on 144k miles)on Super unleaded and then Optimax alone for the past 3 1/2 years and no problems. My other half has run his STIiv on the same for the last 4 years and no probs either (he's done 12 track days as well, so the car's been pushed (used octane booster on the track days)). We have not had any remaps done.

I have a friend who owns an RB5 and he services a few Scoobs at his garage (including cambelt changes on both of ours) and has done engine rebuilds after no. 3 piston melts). We're in North Hants on Hants/Surrey border if you get stuck and cannot find anyone local to you, let me know and I'll give you his number.
