Ok looking at getting on of these as a toy, to put crap in & take the dogs out in, careful !
Only needs to be driven short journeys, so it doesn't need to be immaculate. Where can you buy them form hardly none on autotrader, looking to pay up to about £1K.... should be able to pick one up for £500-£600 ideally soft back type or hard top not a truck cab any ideas would be grateful ??

 

Hardly ever get a Landy Series 2 or 3 below £1,000 - no matter how rough they are.

The "Land Rover International" magazine has an excellent For Sale section in it.

 

i know of a series 2a tax exempt petrol 1971, swb with removable hard top - makes a great convertible. 2 1/4 petrol. free wheeling hubs.

Tax'd and over 6 months MOT. If you are interested post here and i will mail you his number.

 

You'll struggle getting one for 500-600 quid that's road worthy

Unless you like to play about with the welder, the ones you'll get at that price won't have MOT's. And most likely failure point is rust.

£1000 is your bare minimum up to £2000 for a good'un SII's will cost a little more due to them being rarer.

Look in the specialist landy mags, as mentioned above LRO is probably the best bet. Also try e-bay always landy stuff for sale there (or bits of at least).

also try Old Sodbury's "Virtual" Sortout sometimes something pops up there too

What are peoples opinions of old landrovers , im looking at getting one or maybe a wrangler as a toy and for towing my boat

 

Old Landies are a right laff to drive. My father in law had an ex MOD lightweight that I used for ages - drank petrol like a Scoob, steering was ****e but a crackin' drive, every one gets out the way when they see you coming through!! My brother has got a 1968 S1/S11 ?, bag o nails but tax exempt and his best mates an MOT tester and it never fails (*know wot I mean?!!*)uses it to transport garden crap/ motocrosser/ building gear etc, and it cost him £900!
Go get one.

I've been looking for a LWB Defender with the roof rack, ladders, bars, snorkel etc. Can't find and even OK one for less than £4k

Saw a perfect one for sale a few months ago outside a farm. It was perfect so thought it must have been going for about £7-8k. I find out later that it sold to the first offer for £1500 as the farm was going under

Keep looking, you will find one. Just hope I do.

The chassis rots fairly quickly badly although the body might be good. You would be far better off buying an old Shogun of even a FourTrak. LandRovers that old are extremely bad news to own and keep going. Crap basically!

I was at Brightwells 4x4 auction last Tuesday - there's usually the odd 4x4 or 2 which goes through for less than a grand. Look at an 80s Range Rover, they'll be cheaper to buy than a series III, although I admit they'll be more to run.

Your definately best looking for an ex MOD series 3 as these are normally well serviced (if not a little ragged) and they replace the chassis rather than scrap them, even if they are 20 years old
There are some mil autions but i doubt you would find many s3's out there now so best bet is a speciallist

I have a series 2 1960 with a transit diesel (pencil injector) fitted, so good on fuel(have origonal 2Ltr diesel). Have both safari hard top and full soft top.
Uprated brakes, o/d, fwh.
Could be tempted to sell for £2500

Many are available with galvanised chassis and some converted to coil springs (Not for £1k though)

Look hard enou and there are some good buys. Landies are very easy to repair if you are handy yourself.

I would go for a series 3 as it has a semi decent heater and a synchromesh gearbox, double de-clutching 1st and 2nd in the 2A is a pain.

Try and get one fitted with overdrive. If it has free wheel hubs make sure the steering isn't heavy. If the hubs are not engaged every week or so the steering swivel hubs become stiff and the steering goes heavy.

A good buy is "LandRover Owner Magazine"

I have found that if the bushes in the hubs have worn, you will experience a knocking, when driving on bumpy roads (most roads in the country then). This knocking can be felt though the steering wheel.
With respect to Lee. I have found that if the steering is "heavy", the problem is usually the intermediate steering link. Which is a complete pain in the **** to repair.
If you do not have experience of Landrovers, get some one who has, to look at any prospective purchase. There are an awful lot of poorly maintained/repaired Landrovers about.

 

"Land Rover Owner" magazine is a a great place to buy Land Rovers.

If you are looking for terribly overpriced Land Rovers

LRO will also have a full selection of tat that people still put over the outside of their vehicles. In fairness to LRO, most off road magazines have columns and advertisements on said tat.

Never said it was a good place to buy Landies from just a good magazine about Landies if your going to buy one. They often have guides to buying certain models and I'm sure you'd be able to get a copy of an older mag.

There are a few good firms who advertise in LRO, you just have to sift through the big wheels and spotlight stuff.

The only way Landies are economical to run Dereck is if you do all the repairs yourself.

And I mean ALL repairs. Any old vehicle is bad news to run if you rely on garages to repair it. Landies being so simple and easy (depending on physical strength ) to work on is one of the reasons they are still a number of old series types still on the road.

But got to admit. Can't beat a good Toyota Land-Cruiser. Well, until they break - series parts are easy and cheap to get hold of. Jap stuff will cost.
