Just had 2 new tyres put on my pride and joy at my local tyre dealer (Renfrew) and the geezer who did it F**KED one of m alloys in the process! Fair play to the guy he did own up and took the price of a repair of the bill but I am faced with the pain in the but of getting it fixed!!

I went to a powdercoater today who told me he could fix the coating but the wheel would look brighter than the other 3.This service would cost me £35 so I got a quote on all 4 being recoated on a same day basis to which the cost is......get this.....£191!

At this price I would be cheaper buying a whole new alloy!!

Any suggestions?

I'd powdercoat all the wheels, as it's a good opporunity to get all the alloys powdercoated to a different colour. ;) :) Depending on the age of your alloys, a new replacement may stand out as much as powdercoating the damaged wheel.

What type of alloys are they?

17" Prodrive 6 spokes in silver.The shagged one makes me feel sick to look at but the price of doing all 4 makes me feel slightly queazy too!

£191 is taking the pi$$.

There's a place in Airdrie (can't remember the name, but a search should find them in the Scotland forum).

I only know of one in Edinburgh and they charge £35 per wheel or £120 for all 4 and it's a same-day job.

There is a place in Airdrie called Wheel Services. Stay well clear of that. I asked him to do one of my wheels to match my powder coated wheels. Got it back and it was really different. Turned out that it was just painted. The paint finish was crap into the bargain (still have the photos). When I complained reasonably nicely he nearly set his dog on me.

Eventually got it done through Murray Motor Company in Edinburgh during some accident damage work, perfect job.

As part of our business up in Aberdeenshire is powdercoating, I would be very wary of same day return coating of wheels. To powdercoat (properly) a set of wheels is time consuming, the prep is very important if you want a lasting finish, and with our experience corners are cut at all the stages, then people end up trying us out. We dont like things going out of here the same day, for fear of having lacquer cracking etc. The prices that others have listed are not over the top, if the people doing them are doing the process correctly and to your satisfaction.

I used Wheel services and 15 months on and the wheels look naff. It was an orange peel type of finish - and have to laugh at Skyenet comments - I had the very same literally.

I'd thoroughly recommend RMS in Prestwick - I'm going there soon to get my Civic Miglia's done and one buckle fixed as well - costs a bit more, but will definately be a class finish.

The place I know of in Edinburgh do send them out on the same day, but having said that they don't close till after midnight, so the day is pretty long.

One of the lads @ work had them refurb his alloys on his Honda. Dropped the car off before 8am and picked them up around 10pm that night.

The charged him £125 for 4 x 16" alloys and spent a lot of time saying who they make sure they do a proper job and how other powerder-coaters don't do things correctly.

I'm not sure who you'd believe, so I guess we can only go on peoples recommendations.

Thanks for the info guys!! Does anybody have any experience with Chameleon in Renfrew? Im considering them.They say I can drop my car at 8.30 and pick it up at 5.30 with all wheels redone. Sound too good to be true? Certainly aint cheap!!(£190!!!!!)

Keith, how does powdercoating work? How is it different to regular painting?

I'd ask exactly how many coats they're doing on your wheels. £191 still sounds a bit expensive to me and I still think you can get a top professional job done without having to always pay for it. Afterall, you could pay £191 and they could still do a sh!t job. Personally, I'd stick with a place you've heard others recommend.

I assume that price doesn't include getting the wheels re-balanced? Also watch out for leaky valves as sometimes a thick layer of paint can interfere with the seal for the valves.
