Thinking of changing my sti and have been looking at rx7's (amongst other cars) however i have heard conflicting reports on the rotary engine reliability, how easy to tune etc. Can anyone shed some light?

Shorla, there is two places you can go for information.

Both will tell the truth about rotaries.

Hi Shorla,

I bought a 3rd Gen RX7 after crashing my Scooby and was just as wary. But their just like Scoobys in the scense of warming up and cooling down etc. (as with any turbo cars)

They just need oil changes every 3K.

Takes a while to get use to RWD but so much fun to drive, and they are rapid!!!

i went in one 2 weeks back in my quest for the next powerful beasty & while i didnt get a drive it was certainly very rapid (even thou not the most powerful 3rd gen) & it is quite nice getting down low in a sports car init & the 2 door look is quite appealing IMO
For me i'm not convinced i'll go for 1 as while they r cheaper to buy than many of the other nimble motors i'm investigating (no soarers lol) i feel the rediculously thirsty engine & risk although not as bad as sum may say of engine rebuild necessity wood probably make up for this & oh r i dont pretend i'm a good driver so i'd kill myself in a week probably lmao

A work collegue has recently changed his (UK spec) RX7 for a Honda S2000. He says the RX7 was a bit thirsty - 19 mpg with a light foot and a following wind - compared to the S2000 at about 30 mpg for a similar sort of performance.

I still like the RX7 though, they have a certain look about them

They are thirsty, but definitely quicker than an S2k.
Also, you cant do anything further with the S2k's power, whereas a few mods to an RX7 produce a lot more power.
They also have torque, whereas the S2k is a rev machine (I owned an Integra for 2 years prior to the RX, so understand VTEC and how cool it is, but I wouldnt swop back)

The rebuild is a pain, but you have to accept it as part of the ownership prospects
If you look at the price of an RX7, even adding on £3.5k for a rebuild doesnt make them all that expensive, and following the rebuild it should run reliably for many thousands of miles (they now use RX8 two piece tips for rebuilds, which should add a good 20k miles to replacement time for tips, moving it to 80 - 100k miles, so about 6 years motoring for me, for example).

They are for enthusiasts, I wasnt one before buying the car, just always wanted one, but I am now, really love rotary power, and very nice looking cars, and when they get a move on, they seriously shift, the "80 - wherever" performance is stunning, you cant believe its still pulling so hard at those speeds, enough to scare you silly!!

Pick mine up from its rebuild on Friday, and cant wait, be nice after three weeks of an A-Class.
