My bike has started to make a strange noise, and I'm wondering if it could be the chain.

Just after I start off I'm getting one or more clicks/jerks which I can also feel through the bike, they normally start about 3k rpm and stop about 6k rpm, then it does it again in second and maybe third. It doesn't do it on a constant throttle or on the over-run

It also does it each time I accelerate again after letting it go on the over-run and it's most noticable when I accelerate at normal road speed.

The bike is a ZXR750 and the chain has done 15k miles

Any ideas what this could be?

Sounds like a tight spot in the chain. Get the bike up on a paddock stand and see if you can see it when you spin the wheel with your hand. Also pull the chain awau from your back sprocket with your fingers, if you can do this then its on its way out.

If you are a Ninja owner and want advice about your bike, post up a question in www.mcnninjas.co.uk (http://www.mcnninjas.co.uk):D, They are a friendly bunch.

If your chain has done 15K on a ZXR750 and is not completely shagged, you are not riding it properly (or have a strict maintenance schedule and/or scotoiler fitted in which case you are knowledgeable enough not to ask this question).

I think your long term answer is give the bike to me to look after for you ;)

I'd have thought that at about 15k the chain and sprockets are ready for swapping if they are the originals. Recently swapped mine on my VTR and its like riding a different bike. I've also swapped the cush drive rubbers which again makes a difference. Don't buy a cheap chain - I did and it lasted 2000 miles... I've now got a Regina chain / sprockets which are lasting well.

Cheers for the replies

I think I'll give it yet another birthday and buy it a new chain and sprockets.

I bought the bike as a cheap weekend toy but seem to be spending more than on my scoob !

Bits so far this year
-set of tyres,oil + filter,air filter,fuel filter
-complete set caliper seals and master cylinder seals (not really necessary but good for peace of mind) ,set of brake pads
and finally a new fuel tap

Its worth it though

Well the noise was definately coming from the chain.I sprayed a load of chain lube on it and its now much quieter.

I'm going to leave it for a while to see if the noise comes back.

Note to self - lube the chain more often even if it looks ok

Get one of these Loobman (http://www.loobman.co.uk) thingys. just as effective as a scottoiler, but 1/4 of the price. I've had one for about 3 months now.
