I have an MY2000, done 6,000 miles. Sometimes when I rev to 4,000 rpm, the engine momenterily sounds like a bag of spanners - quite a harsh rattle, as though the cam shaft is a bit loose, or starved of oil. Is this usual, or should I get it checked ?

When you say a harsh rattle is it,

a metallic vibration - heat shield split ?
a rattle from the bulkhead area - hydraulic lines ?

Suffered from both. Both fixed under warranty at 30 months.(all heat shields although only one split - top dealer !)

Sounds like the heat shield needs welding to me!

 

I had something similar...........traced it to my rev counter!!!!! The needle/insides must resonate slightly above 4000 rpm. Relieved it was something simple!

 

doh............ didn't mean rev counter, meant Boost Gauge!

 

If it's any help I have an MY00 and it sings at 4000rpm, i.e a rattle free zone. Take me to your leader....doh....I mean take it to your dealer.

I agree with the heat shield idea, mine split and I think it was bout 4k that it ratteled at. Again a warrenty job, prehaps thats why Subaru dominate JD power.
