View Full Version : Dodgy plug socket....

When I was going to plug in my washer/dryer the other week, I noticed that the previous unit was obviously wired directly into the wall socket (a fused unit). Anyway, as I didn't want to have any warranty issues with the new w/d I replaced the wall unit with a plug socket, as the w/d came with a premoulded plug.

Well, the issue is, the whole behind the socket is too big, so it isn't sitting right.. I thought about cutting a square bit of MDF and using that as bracket to support the socket where the plasterboard is no more... anyone got a better suggestion?

Cheers, Alex

Hi Mate.

I think I have a small piece of plaster board about a foot square you could use a bit to fill the gap. Talk to you later about it.

MIRP! thanks for the offer - I think I'll try the mdf for now, it will be easier to secure/fit... the plaster board is quite screwed in that area of the wall.

You can buy socket surrounds, they are a bit bigger than the socket, so that the socket sits on them and not the wall!!
Most biggish diy stores should have them!

What is it mounted to??

Patress boxes are std sizes, just different depths (single and double)

A lighting one is about 16mm a socket one is about 25mm..

It should be 25mm or so deep minimum, or you risk squashing the wires and shorting them out.. something doesnt sound right at all..

David, its a standard size, but for some reason someone 'adjusted' the whole, and its just a little bit too big.

In the kitchen the washing machine and fridge/freezer have remote isolation switches, separate to the fused wall socket that they were directly wired into.

Rgds, Alex
