Soot (?) particles from exhaust

For the last 24 hours my car (WRX with 94,000 miles)has run rougher than a bear's bum and drunk petrol like a man on a bender.
I checked around last night and the exhaust is very sooty - more than usual and the exhaust spits out what look like bits of soot - definitely not oil particles.
So any ideas.
I have reset the ECU this morning and its better but not perfect. I would like to know even if the car has been traded in for a replacement. So I'm only running it while the new one goes through SVA etc.

Seems like your MAF or Lambda sensor has given up the ghost. Sorry not to be more specific but thats where I'd start looking. I'm sure others on here can help more.
