I haven't put much into this board of late so if there is some interest i'll go through some of the motions of Tims engine build and so on, covering phase 2 heads on phase 1 engine and the complications that arrise, GT series turbo fitment with external wastegate, fuel system mods and so on.

He wants good power drivabilty and reliability so not going to stupid. What we have done is tried this with an open deck block, but some measures have been taken.

1- heavy duty 97mm liners
2- 14mm stud and nut conversion
3- steel shim gaskets

so we shall see what happens...had to be tried.

Cams are high lift, overlap is kept sensible to retain a good idle. High lift cams in a turbo engine can result in low gas speed at low engine revs, the heads have been ported with this in mind gas speed is 200 feet per second at some points of the port this is a very good improvement and will help with the related probs of high lift cams, heads still flow 170 cfm.

Spotted Davids post on turbosport in the test section ;)

Block is a 2l that came with the car, it does have oil squirters to help cool the piston crown. The liners are a top hat heavy duty diesel liner, there is a lot of machine work to fit them but ends up a nice job.

Beryllium when i get this new pic thing sorted il put some pics up of a converted closed deck block and some of the machining pics. I get the liners custom made now as thay used to be 7 inches long and it was a pain machining them down, i dont now what the intended vehicle was i selected them by size and flange o/d.

ok cheers david, wasted stem means that the part of the valve stem that you see in the port is a smaller diameter than the rest of the stem giving less flow restriction.

Steve has recently carried out a dummy build on the engine to ensure clearances etc all work out,
All the parts are now ready for the final engine build, which will take place
within the next week or so, I'll post some more pics as we progress :D

Great project, especially as (for now) you are not going 'mad', just looking for a strong driveable engine. Looking forward to doing a 2.2 or bigger for my hill climb STi.
Can you give us all following the thread an idea of costs also? Scooby Mania list a built 2.2 for 5K, interested how you get on!

Engine is based on an my95 open deck block with oil squirters to cool the crown of the piston. The phase 2 open deck blocks do not have oil squirters. The open and closed deck blocks have the same cylinder wall thickness, the extra material is only at the closed area makeing it more rigid, because of this there is less chance of bore distorsion that could result in head gasket failer due to the movement. The stroke of tims engine is std 75mm the bore is 97mm resulting in a 2217cc. The block has a heavy duty 97mm i/d liner with a top hat, this is a thick wall rigid liner that will resist extreme cyl preasure, also we have 14mm heavy duty studs that will have much less chance of stretching under the cyl presure. The use of a steel shim gasket will 1.cause less bore distortion (also one of the benefits of a stud and nut kit) 2. The
steel shim gasket will seat on the top hat of the liner making thing even more rigid. I am very hopeful that this will work if there are any gasket failer issues or excessive cyl leakage then the engine will be rebuilt with a closed deck block. One benefit with a subaru block is that the thread for the studs is below the cyl this is also to prevent bore distorsion.
