Big bills not possible. Once you've run out of credit you get a reject when you dial the FRIACO number. Unless you configure your router to automatically dial the PAYG number when the FRIACO number fails, you won't be billed.

I think it's being marketed to people who can't get broadband, i.e. you apply for broadband, you're out of reach "but you can have this product called midband".

PS: the PC dialler is cunningly written so you can't find out the dialled number, so you would have trouble configuring it in your router anyway

More details annouced for BT Midband.

-Pretty much confirms its just a HH+128K ISP package
-Possibly a slightly different NTE if you aren't already a HH customer.
-Looks like standard Multilink PPP for 128K.

So currently I have

HH+64K Anytime for (£25+£15 / month). No hard limits on Connect time.
versus
Midband (HH+128K Anytime) for (£25+£10 / month) Hard limit of 150 hours (75 @ 128K). Then Pay-As-You-Go

Looks like I'll need to monitor my on-line time for a few weeks to see if I can save £5/month

Would have been better using all the cash that's been spent on product development and marketing to cut prices for HH users.

 

Just been sent some additional info.

The non usb NTE is the 9c (pre-Nov01). Users will need a TA or Router which supports 128K

Drivers for the USB enabled NTE (9d) already have 128K support in. Will bond/un-bond the second channel as required. There is no option to force 2 channels, but you can force it to stay at only 1 channel.

Normal 2Hr ISP end disconnect and reconnect.

I suspect it will sell to the unwashed who have never really understood ISDN but the lure of 128K is not enough to risk the hard time limits and possible big bills for me. (I use a router to dial on demand for any PC on the LAN).

And of course the "always on" for mail part of the hype was just p*issing in the wind

As I will shortly be changing from Broadband to ISDN following a house move I awaited Midband with interest.
I think it is still best for me to pay £25 HH + an ISP for another £20ish (Firefly).

If that's the case then the first time I used my allowance up, I would end up with the pay-as-you-go number configured as a backup to the primary on the router - so dialing would still be automatic and big bills still a possibility.

Why BT couldn't just launch a "128K ISDN" service instead of dicking about calling it "mid-band" is completely beyond me.

Well, as currently one of the poor souls who can only get HH, then this offering doesn't do zip to wet my fancy.

What's in it for me? Limited time & a bit @ 128K?

My setup is simillar to Deano's in that its on often (WFH for email & VPN) & sometimes games & d'loads. I'm going to cane 150 hrs in a month.

I'll continue to d/load large stuff @ work (ADSL/free) & 128k ISDN doesn't do didly to my game ping, so other than *slightly* affecting my VPN throughput capability there's naf all to interest me

 

I guess the answer will be found in the marketing spin.

But I had a 128 ISDN bonding trial & it made no difference whatsoever...

Ask Deano as he knows the reasoning as well as all things Cisco & pingy

 

On my routed (3Com) ISDN, I found 70ms to be a good ping.

 

Carl, you seem to have a good inside line on the dialer setup (dont have a boatid by chance do you ?)...

Are you suggesting it will only be available through some bespoke dialer software ? How is that guaranteed to work (complete with dynamic MPPP) with the myriad of internal and external TA which are out and about - the faq makes it pretty clear its not limited just to the USB port.
