hi,

Sky news have just reported that Makinen has
been disqualified from the Rally of Australia.

Apparently the Evo had an illegal turbo...has anyone got any more details?

Tommi Makinen has been excluded due to the turbo on his car not
complying with FIA homolgations. The FIA Technical delegate examined
the turbo after the rally and found it did not comply with homologation
rules. An FIA representative this morning said it appeared that
the turbo's non-compliance was a genuine mistake rather than deliberate.

The change in the rally results, and the extra points for Peugeot,
mena that it has now won the Manufacturers Championship (even if
Ford equalled Peugeot's Championship points by coming first and second
in the Rally of Great Britain - which it theoretically could -
Peugeot would win the Championship on a countback).

The Telstra Rally Australia results also puts Gronholm in a nearly
unbeatable position to clinch the Drivers championship to ensure a
double triumph for Peugeot.

This means that Burns must win the RAC and Gronhome not finish in the points as he now has a 9 point lead and you get 10 points for winning. Lets hope nobody does anything stupid like on the 1995 RAC when it was between McRea and Carlos and spectators put obstacles in the way of Carlos.

Darren: Too right!

If anyone is spotted trying to do anything like this you should report it to the marshals ASAP. (Sector Marshal if possible)

We all want Burnsey to win, but placing obstacles should qualify as attempted murder http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/mad.gif

Makinens loss of victory is a total disaster for Burns. Nine points is just hoping for too much lads. And remember back after the safari one two I thought they would have had the manufacturers sewn up the acropilis. Its hard to aportion blame for the poor performance in the second half of the year. The P2000 I thought would be unbeatable after seeing it in portugal.Things swing around alot though in the wrc.Remember 99 in the first half of the year when burns and juha had a dismal six months and subaru came all too close to pulling out of rallyin and then burnsy clawed back over forty points in the second half of the year. Its hard to know what the 44S will perform like next year. Its a new car so you realisticly have to be lookin at 2002,when is that Xsara arrivin??????? Last drivers title was 95,long time ago now even though it doesnt seem like it.

The Xsara arrives next year on a limited WRC programme, as for the performance with the WRC Impreza the start of last year was when the new box, diffs and hydraulic systems were fitted then they came good and Prodrive had the upper hand as everyone was trying to develop similar systems and now Pug and Ford are catching up the advantage is lost, it's like swings and roundabouts.
