Just moved into a house with the original 1950 metal fuse box. You could try these 2 way (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=12849) or three way (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp?id=12362) sockets that just replace a single socket. All my lighting circuits have no earth and wooden boxes behind the switch.

Well we finally moved in on Wednesday. Nice house. Shame about the fact the "lick of paint" missed behind any objects hanging on the wall or behind sofa

Anyhow, it was lived in by an old dear and most rooms are single socket, including my play room (a nice 14 * 10 foot room :D )

Now how the feck do I plug all my kit ( 3 pcs, router, monitor, video, ps2, tv, etc etc) into this one socket. Someone suggested changing the single socket for a double, which apparently is easy to do.

The house was built in the sixties and has a modern fuseboard ( prolly counts for f all but i dunno ) Is installing more sockets easy, without ripping out great hunks of plaster etc etc easy ?

Hopefully this link (http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.jsp;jsessionid=3N0IJJV02PDGLCJO2C3CIIQ?ts=1815 2&id=12849) will work.

If not, search for part "12849" - "CONVERTA SOCKET 2 TO 1 - Add sockets quickly & easily. No new pattress, fittings or wall chiselling required. BS 1363."

You can also get triples.

The 3 way is from a double not a single, but they are a good product. They are made by Clipsal and are available through most electrical wholesalers as well as Screwfix.

Got quite a few in the shed as my mate used to work for them :D

Stueyb,

I am in excatly the same situtation as you. 1 single plug socket in the master bedroom:eek:!! Today I was chiseling the walls away to add 3 double sockets and remove the single socket. Cost was minimal, it was only about £10.00 for 3 backing plates and 3 fascis, as I bought the parts from a discount trade shop, but you don't have to be trade :D:D:D. Oh, and I had to by a 2" electrical chisel for under a fiver.

I personally know sweet FA about electrics and don't want to know, this is why my girlfriends dad is connecting them for us tomorrow after he finishes work.

Its not what you know, but who you know.

first thing to remember is the wiring may be old..

fusebox may be modern.. that means fcuk all..

remove the facia to the socket, how many wires are there? two x 2.5mm T&E?

if there are two chances are its a ring main, would have to open the fusebox to confirm its not a radial..

If its old then it may be just a spur, or not even earthed..

I wouldnt try running loads of things of one socket, it may just result in a fire..

it may even be worth getting a NICEIC** approved company around to check it out..

** The National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting is a consumer safety organisation set up to protect against unsafe and unsound electrical installations. It is the independent regulatory body for the electrical industry.

Worth having a look in detail at the survey you had done, if it was half decent they often check things such as this as the cost isn't insignificant.

Ive heard of a case where they chisselled out above all sockets and added a few inches of modern wiring but left all the original further away than that. Meant that anyone just removing the socket would see modern wiring!!

If you just had a "valuation" i.e. drive by look to see if the house is still standing ;) then forget it.
