Or somebody who knows what they are doing - 'cos I don't!

There are a number of people on SN wanting to know how to fit folding mirrors to their UK/Euro car. I have the bits, but not the technical ability to follow the wires through.

I have had a look and as far as I am aware, it is a matter of finding a wire on the loom. Wires/connectors exist at the switch end, but not the mirror end...

So, this is a project that I think should be started & documented & if custom parts are needed, then someone might make a few quid..

A friend is getting a new door for for his WRX. I'll ask if I can have a look at the old one next time I see him, and compare it to what is in my UK door when I fit my new speakers.

Well, I've got some foldy mirrors & the foldy mirror switch...

I've confirmed that the mirrors will fit & the switch does.

The mirrors as is work with the new switch.

There is an additional plug existing that fits into the foldy switch (shape & all)

There are no additional wires @ the door end - nor can I find any wires the same colour.

It is, however, nearly 2 years since I had a play, so need to refresh exactly.

so work out what wires are needed and add them :D

Puff which car are are you fitting the mirrors to and what car are did you source them & the switch from. Very interest in doing the same to my P1

:p :p :p

I don't know, 'cos I is not an AutoElectrician & as soon as I put one of then blue clampy things onto a wiring system, I fuse the car

Hence why I asked for an AUTOELECTRICIAN

Multi-meter? How's that work then?

Jazz

They're an STi IV's (I think) & from none other than Andy Tang :D

(Who had the same problem in that he WAS NOT AN AUTOELECTRICIAN  )

Thanks. you should have a chat to Mickle, he's trying to do the same on his P1 and may be able to help.

Here I am, Puff I can give you the wiring diagrams from a P1's wiring to the mirrors. Maybe we can get somewhere from there. I really need to see the wiring from an STI import that has the correct wiring in there as default...

It's 'cos of Mickle I whacked this post up!!

Thinking that someone here might be able to offer some useful assistance  Should've known better

;) :p ;)

I did a search for the number of people interested and as there were quite a few, thought it might be quite a useful project to undertake & document...

Ill help you if you want..

Mail me off board with any diagrams you have...

I have access to a car with folding mirrors that I can check.

OK

Under the mirror control switch we have the following

A block connector with a number of wires in it, a number of spaces being empty. From the top & North to South there are two spare points on the RHS. These correspond to 2 mail lugs on the Mirror Folding Switch which I have got. So we need 2 wires, I imagine one will retract the mirror & the other put it out again. The switch is in the form of a rocker, with a neutral position. Forward - out, reverse - in.

There is also a connector that is not attached to anything. It has a black wire with silver rings every inch & a brown wire with a blue seam, also with silver rings. It won't connect to anything on the switch. Wonder what thats for?

Report on the mirror end later...

Forgot to say this is off of a P1 without the folding mirrors (might have wiring already?) but hopefully if we can get a scope of cars we'll see a solution ;)

Well the bottom switch is the one to which I was refering...

The connector spaces free are on the LHS of the bottom diagram

Hmmm..

Colour city!

Connectors for LHS mirror & RHS mirror for mine (MY97 STi?) are both identical with the options for 6 pins on 2 rows. On both mirors, 5 of the available positions are taken in this format (from on top)

- - -

LHM

Pink / Purple

Yellow & Blue / White / Light Green

RHM

Brown / Silver

Green & Black / Blue (White Stripe) / Red (Blue Stripe)

Note that in the bottom LHS of each connector 2 wires are going in, so Yellow wire / Blue wire on LHM & Green wire / Black wire on RHM

:)

I've had a look at my P1 & can firm Mickle's diagram. It is the black/white & yellow wire connectors which are not used by the UK switch.

I've just purchased a STi5 switch and this has two extra pins for connecting to the black/white & yellow wires.

Puff - comparing ur UK mirrors to the folding ones are there any pins which are unused on the UK ones?

Puff The Magic Wagon!

Guess this is going to turn into a P1 u/grade AND a UK u/grade :rolelyes:

P1's have more wires...

I'll check my connectors as haven't taken the panel off yet.

Hi all

Another P1 owner who is interested in folding mirrors (and heated ones if poss)?

Isn't the heating just a special mirror?

Bob

OK - lets add heating to the list as well.

Foresters have heated mirrors...

Legacy TT's as well :)

My UK has heated mirrors, it's just the glass that has the element so if you get folding mirrors with non-heated glass just swap the glass over.

Mickle
03 March 2003, 19:40
Is the glass perminently heated or is there a control switch?

CrisPDuk

There is a control switch, integrated into the mirror ajustment switch on cars that were fitted with heated mirrors. You should not permanently wire any heater element as it will eventually cause an overload, but it is possible to wire either a separate switch, source the crrect switch from a breaker, or alternatively connected them to the heated rear screen switch.

As a general rule, wires do not change colour throughout the loom unless they have passed through either a switch or a mechanism. Therefore if your block connector has a wire coming out of it, the chances are that the same colour wire goes in the other side, all you need to do is find the source of that colour within the main loom.
If you have access to a car with the folding mirrors, trace the wiring from the mirror, through the switch, all the way back to the fusebox. Then within your own car start at the same point on the fusebox, you will probably find that the first part of the wiring is place due to the modular construction of modern looms, trace the wire to its termination & continue from there.

I am based in the North-West, If you are local I am more than happy to investigate further for you, It is a lot easier to do than explain:)
