Wherever you decide to go you'll end up paying about the same. As British gas prices are worked out by a regulated price formula companies will have an advertising blitz just before a new price formula comes into force. This makes their prices look good over a short period but will work out more in the long term.
You also have to look at standing charges. Some companies charge less for the fuel used but more on a daily standing charge. They will show you price comparison charts for say the three month winter period but not the summer period. They also show their own prices being paid by direct debit against other companies chardges shown as paid by quaterly cheque. This could alone amount to a big difference.
All in all there are about five large companies selling gas and electric. The rest of them are just subsidaries of the big five.
