redoing kitchen and got as far as the boiler...i wantto modify a std cupboard so the boiler is hidden.

my design means the cupboard will have no top or bottom (boiler cant be seen due to pelmmets and cornice) but the door of the cupboard will sit about 20mm away from the boiler whichh gets hot...as they do!

so will this be bad for the boiler? or the cupboard door?

my guess is a boiler needs to get hot anyway so it dont care and the door is chipboard covered laminate so not gonna warp like real wood might.

just want to check though.

ps- diy tip- dont drill through a mains wire...get your dad round (electrician)....tell him the fuse went when you did it.....allow him to gouge out the damage wire and discover the fuse hadnt gone by electrocuting himself!

Hi...Different boiler manufacturers require different clearance dimensions from the front of the boiler to a combustable surface ie. cupboard door.

ohhhhh....may 20mm be to little for some then?

"Possibly" :D

Ours has got around 50mm (IKEA units are quite deep ;) ) and that's been checked out by our local corgi lads as not being a problem.

I did the saem as chiark when fitting my sisters kitchen, although, Wickes who specced the kitchen said they would not do it if they fitted it, as it would brak regulations.

Corgi has been round and inspected the boiler 2 times since, and AOK.

Looks good, even if i say so myself:D, my idea;), sister happy, for 2 minutes anyway:rolleyes:, and you cant see the boiler:D

I did this at my last house and it looked great. Boiler was at the end of the run so I fixed one side panel to the adjacent cupboard, used part of another side panel fixed to the wall for the hinges, then fitted the pelmet and cornice rails across the gap so it looks like any other cupboard until you open it. There was about 30mm gap between door and boiler and didn't see any distortion in over 3 years.

Am planning on doing the same thing when I refit this kitchen. Checked with the boiler manual (Ideal) and it recommends 75mm gap, but it does not say whether this is for air-flow or to allow the flap covering the controls to be opened.

fig- sounds like my situation- sod it! i'll just put tinfoil on the back of the door to reflect any heat.

Most boiler manuals specifiy a minimum clearance for servicing and for operation.

I'd follow the manufacturer's installation guidance for safety.

Cheers,

Alex

Please look in your boiler installation book.it will have the clearances in there.
