John, you should know that something is only as valuable as someone is prepared to for it.

I am guessing those valuable parts of yours have a captive market of ONE, and even then from what I hear you could do with upgrading ;)

It's the servicing costs I would worry about.

Tranny jack did arrive, found we need another few bits that did not come with the STi short shift gear linkage. Main issue is the shifter - need another M8 and sleeve like shown in third picture. These are different on the classic gearbox.

looking at those pics also makes me wonder if we are missing a clip of some sorts, for the "lift up" reverse lever at the box end too. had not thought of how that fits until that pic.

did you get any pics of the adjuster thing, near the dip stick, I pointed out?

there should be a silver collar on the linkage with a cable (like bike throttle) on it which connects to the reverse interlock.

You should be ashamed of that wiring!

Consider removing the bottom studs if you havent allready..

Wiring looks normal to me, those techedge WB cables are way too long on our cars, unless you're mapping from the boot!

Hmm,i did not do this as i put in the gearbox first and then the engine,and i think it will be a problem ,when i need to change the clutch.

So i think i have to take out the engine instead :D

Garden hose is the water injection ;) Not really, breathers.

Linkage might be hitting the floor of the car once everything is bolted up, will need to see.

Thanks to David at API I'll be mounting up a 6MT too, but a JDM one.....with a nice STi rear diff to go with it :)

I'll put up a separate post tomorrow with a few piccies, but I'm accepting offers on my 5MT front Quaife ATB already....50k gentle km's ;)

varies really on uk or jdm, and how much you can haggle

the one i have is a jdm, they wanted 1300 plus vat and deliver for it, i got it for 850 all in, fully complete.

I suspect a brand new UK 6 speed, which is what john has i think, will be in the region of £3k

JDM ratios will offer a more even spread through gears. in john's, 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th feel even and then a fairly large jump to 5th. first impressions are of some very quick changes between the first 4 gears but will only know for sure when the boost gets increased and the full rev range is used. we only had a gentle run last night.

Ratios do feel a bit short on the 6MT UK box, especially 2nd, 3rd, 4th, even on low boost. However, I think I just need to get used to being a gear higher.

Suretrac front diff is interesting, T-uk had a little play with it on a roundabout, and it seemed like it was about to understeer, but the back end likes to play which makes it a completely different car. Need to get used to this. Had a little play (at more sensible speed) on a few corners I know well and the front end just chews into the road, obviously not pushing it yet though and on low boost setting.

My front right CV joint clicking on full lock that developed a few days before the last box's demise has disappeared. Seems it must have been the gearbox after all. Can drive round on full lock in both directions with no noises now.

john: my understanding is that with suretrack, when a front wheel lifts, you'll lose all power to the front and it will divert to the rear!

If you lift the inside wheel on suretrack it will spin, and torque will be distributed Fr/Rr according to the centre diff, but that's also the case with an open diff. Except with an open diff if you unweight the inside front without lifting it, you can get the same effect, wheras the suretrac only needs a slight amount of traction to get drive to the outside wheel.

You are very unlikely to lift inside front completely (on a front engined 4wd car) unless you are cresting neg camber bend, which won't be often.

A plated front diff will always have drive, but will potentially torque steer like a *******, or push on equally badly depending on the exact surface.
