hi guys

we have a major problem with our web servers that are casuing all the CPU's to max out within seconds, some bleedin Microsoft thing called mtx.exe ??

Our tech people have been trying to resolve it most of the night with no success.

If anyone can help please call, desperate now and very tired !

What O/S? NT, Win 2000?

What Service Pack?

If it's NT, what version of IIS?

If it's NT 4, what components from the Option Pack were put on?

I thought that, but checked the

 

We are using NT4 running IIS on two front end machines connecting through ODBC to our database machines that appear to be fine. We are using service pack 6.

The machines aren't brand new, about 2 years old now, but are compaq proliant PIII 700.

The problem is very erratic, suggest a code problem with an ASP but nothing has changed in the past few weeks. and this problem started a couple of days ago.

Are you using MTS? The poroblem is unlikely to be in ASP itself.

Has anything at all changed over the past couple of days? Any new software service packs etc.

Are these live servers?

Are you running any sofware loading balancing or clustering?

Ok, I take it you've checked the IIS logs to see if a particular ASP is called just before it goes to 100% each time.

Can you confirm if they are single or multi CPUs?

Best bet, I think, it the exception monitor. You can set it up, wait for the CPU to hit 100% and then get a dump of everything that IIS/MTS was doing at the time.

I assume from the fact that MTX is involved that the websites are being run 'out of process' - may be worth running them 'in process' (IIS settings) to see if that helps (often does). You'll need to be running in process to catch everything with the exception monitor.

Any non ASP code (ie VB or C components) involved in the website?

Have you check that there is enough disk space for the swapfiles? What's the memory utilisation? Had a problem yesterday when a server went nuts due to running out of swap space!

phew what a crap week ! problems have been sort of patched up, resulting in Microsoft coming into our office next week to try and find out what has gone **** up, even they didn't have a clue.
