Does anyone have a ball park figure for installation of an entire central heating system into a 2 bed house? There is currently over night storage heaters, no boiler.

My girlfriend and I went to look at a house that we are interested in buying on Saturday and it is going to need Central Heating (amongst other things :() but neither of use have any idea on how much to budget for.

Downstairs consists of lounge, kitchen and hall way
Upstairs consists of Bedroom 1, Bedroom 2 and bathroom

Many thanks
Darren

p.s I thing I might be spending more time in here as all the houses we can afford all need a bit of DIY :(

If you have a Combi boiler heating system it will cost very roughly 2.5k to 3.0k plus vat.

Hi Darren
A rough price for a combi system would be around 2.5K including vat(northern prices)
6or7 rads,thermostats,time clock,and using a good boiler(we use Worcestor 24,28 Cdi).

dont be tempted for one of those that advertise in free papers"Combi and 10 rads, for £1500" I and i guess Mog has seen their work!!

go for reccomendations(sp??)from friends.

Cheers guys, the prices are as I expected really.

We have put in an offer on the house so hopefully it will be ours soon and I can start on the DIY :D

£3K

Are you a plumber to trade Mog?

My parents were quoted about that for a new system. I know a few plumbers, who told me to get all the bits from our local plumbers merchant and they would install the system for them.

I got them a Worcester Combi, rads, copper pipe and all the bit's n bobs for just over £1K. They did the install in 1.5days for £500.

They live in a Bungalow with a 4' high basement, so the install was a doddle. Couldn't understand why they were quoted twice that for the same system

Darren,

Have a look here (http://www.discountedheating.co.uk/) for an idea of the costs in parts. The workout how much labour the plumbers charging you.

Stefan..what exactly are you trying to say as I can't even understand your first line/sentence ?.IF you are trying to tell everyone that you can get a central heating system supplied and fitted for £1500 and anything quoted over that is basically the "plumber" ripping you off then I'm afraid you don't live in the real world. Prices quoted in different parts of the country will be quite different as scoobynutter has already stated however it would never go as low as £1500 from a proffessional Plumber....

Mog,

Was only asking as I've notice you replying to a few plumbing Q's; no hidden meaning in the question.

I'm only stating my experience that my parents had a full system installed for £1500, when companies were quoting £3000. Both systems were identical - same boiler, same rads and they quoted an extra 1.5 days work for install and commissioning.

As far as I'm concerned those companies were quoting over the odds. I mean just how much profit will they add to the parts and just exactly how much do they expect to charge for labour.

From my own personal experience, I felt my parents were getting ripped off.

Of course, different parts of the country will vary but people should do some homework and armed with facts, judge for themselves if it's a good deal or not.

If I needed a system myself I would gets some quotes, check how much I could buy them for, then workout if the plumber was giving a good deal or not. And whether there was room for some negotiation.

When my parents first looked for a boiler, British Gas quoted £2K and £100 cashback for the old one. They could have bought the very same boiler from the merchant for £700. Obviously, British Gas would install the thing, but is that really £1300 worth?

Quote::They did the install in 1.5days for £500.

Says it all!;)

A new system!

how could they install a new ch system and remove the existing boiler, pipework, cylinder, water tanks, resize gas supply for a combi, put rads on the wall, brick up old flue opening from old boiler, take all floor boards up for pipe runs, commission and flush system(THis alone takes a day as the flushing solution needs to be left in the system overnight!!),reflush system twice to remove flush solution, then add inhibitor.check gas working pressures etc etc..................

Either there was 10 of them or they didnt do a proper job.

Thankyou scoobynutter saves me saying any more, Stefan no offence taken but you should also consider the warranty implications.

SN,

As I already said, my parents live in a bungalow with a 4' high basement, so no floorboards to lift.

I ripped out the old rads and most of the pipework myself, so yeah that saved some time, but it took me 2 hours tops to do all that by myself. They had no water tank no remove either, just an old fecked combi.

The lads I used are a father/son business that have been going for 20yrs. It took kevin (son) 2hrs to fit all the new rads while his dad sorted the new boiler and gaswork and they had a young lad to just run all the pipework. That was all done in the morning, with only the pipework to finish and the commissioning to do.

If it takes anyone longer than 10mins to fit a new rad to a dry wall, they should find another vocation.

That was just over a year ago and the system has been flawless. I was in no doubt that they would do a 1st-class job and they did just that.

As for warranty, they are covered by British Gas who were happy to cover the boiler, rads, pipework, etc.. for about £10 per month.

It's a DIY forum after all, so if Darren's prepared to do some of the work himself, then he could save himself a lot of money; my folks did :)

Maybe you lads take tea breaks or something every hour or so, but Kevin and his dad worked their bollocks off and did the job in a weekend (Sat/Sun). I mean, what's so difficult about a combi boiler and 8 rads

Check out mrcentralheating.co.uk for full packages,i have used them, good choice of boilers and quality rads at a price my gas man could not believe.

Combi systems are a piece of piss to fit properly,do all the water yourself and find a good honest corgi bloke to do the gas and boiler. It aint brain surgery like some people think.

Cheers guys

Hello,

I'm not in the trade, but have installed several systems.

For a two bed house, you are looking at just over 1K for parts. This will include a combi boiler, rads, valves, pipe (15 and 22), fittings.

I have no idea on labour costs, as I did it all myself (bar the gas inspection/landlords certificate of course).

Darren,

What I'm trying to say is if you want to do some DIY, then do some homework and get quotes from plumbers. You could then buy the stuff yourself, get some recommendations for plumbers and ask them to install and commission the system for you.

That way they'll give you a cost based on timescale and labour charges. I'd think you'd get a much better deal that way.

Stefan
