I followed the instructions I found on the net to the letter (or so I thought). The firmware upgrade appeared to go according to plan but once I'd done it, it would not synch onto the ADSL.

So I called my ISP and told them it was FUBAR. They arranged for a BT engineer to inspect it and "he will replace it if he proves it faulty". The engineer knew about as much about 5861 modems as I know about brain surgery, so within 5 mins of arrival I had a new 5861 in and working

I took the cowards way out then and bought a Netgear DG814 instead.

IIRC Mr Footlong has done at least one successfully, and am sure it was he pointed me in the direction of the applicable instructions.

Word of advice - you need to ensure you get the correct firmware for your modem as there are more than one version of the 5861 about.

Download the latest set of router utilities and try to do the conversion under win 98 if poss, as there is more to do under 2kxp to get the tftp stuff etc working perfectly. If you follow the instructions to the letter, it will be fine. Don't bother using the firmware listed on the conversion instructions, as the newest firmware works fine.

If you want, you could either send me your router and I can send one out to you preprogrammed, or program yours if you need or have major probs doing it yourself. I have 2 spare at the mo.
My very first one I completely corrupted and wiped due to the fact that my lovely ISP told me to wipe it to fix a problem. I brought it back from the dead succesfully tho
That was nothing to do with the firmware conversion stuff tho.

Yep , done one here too. Trivial once you get to contact the tftp server - some messing about with subnets required when I did mine.

If you get the latest firmware you get the web interface to configure it all too.

Yes, those are the instructions

I have done it on XP,2K and 98 and have had trouble making the tftp stuff work properly under xp/2k, whereas 98 has been fine

I have had to use the console stuff and serial cable before to repair the one that I made into a toaster mentioned earlier, but the upgrade is done by ethernet.

P.S, you will need to upload the 4 firewall config files included with the utilities as well, but rename them to capitals, such as:

NOSEC
MINSEC

leaving the .txt bit at the end as is

I wouldn't use the firewall stuff unless you are well versed in telnet and port management, as the firewall configs lock down pretty well everthing on both sides by default. The only thing that I would do in telnet would be to tell the router not to advertise it's IP address on the WAN side or respond to pings from the WAN. I need to read this up again, as it has been a year since I figured out how to do it.

Advice:

The firmware file is called 5861-001.5380 Remove the 0 to make it 5861-001.538, as this is part of what confuses the tftp and bootp servers about what file to upload to the router.

Also, capitalise the 4 txt files that are actually included with the firware file

2. How "clicky" does the reset switch feel.

Cheers mate, I know all about this little puppy and use a lot of the features with clients . Really good, but with 1 major problem. OVERHEATING. Suffice to say that I take a dremel heavily to each one to sort it. Ptholt on here had his one burn a hole through the casing on the christmas day before last, I **** you not . Cooked itself quite literally.

I seem to be getting a fast connection through the router already ... even hitting 58.8 with flashget where I only got 40's with the string ray ... is this down to the bt firmware or the router in general.

That explains why the study is so hot !!! Mine is v hot to the touch at the bottom ... any dangers here ?

I seriously would ventilate the bugger's casing if I were you, The only client's ones that I have had die so far have been from overheating. Not common, but by far the most common fault logged by the bt engineers about them.

If you are happy with the box, then leave it. If you are naturally curious, then by all means do it

If you completely roger it somehow, I am sure that I can sort you out with one of my boxes and fix yours

"naturally curious" - That will be me !!! normally with 3 or 4 bits left over afterwards! I am a support manager at the mo and not allowed near anything techinical so I enjoy "playing" much to the missus complaining.

I have done all of them at the top and sides. I think that I still have my first one, which I just randomly drilled. The others are somewhat tidier now

The reset switch is membrane-style, like a keyboard type feel and you can use either the config manager or the web interface to set up your connection and router. As you are fairly new to this router setup, I would use the web interface wizard, works fine . I use the web interface for pretty well everything, as it does most of the day to day stuff in there

Her is a close up pictur of my original one that I did:



Pictures always bring out the flaws in things, it doesn't look bad at all in normal light. I ws a cowboy though and juct sliced through all of the side vents, instaead of simply dremelling the sides too. Does help the cooling no end though and makes the router 100% rock solid, at least in my case.

having the router on its side and letting convection take place is keeping it v cool. Just need to find thingsome more professional to support it rather than a book !
