Any use?

"Fookin marvellous" to coin a phrase!

They fit just perfectly :)

(To fill in the blanks for anyone else reading this, David and his dad have made a new set of washers for me from a coat hook of all things. They cover the holes brilliantly. The wonders of a lathe :D - it would have taken me days with the dremel ;) )

Thanks again mate, and please thank your dad again. :)

Well done.

It will be coming together nicely then?

Lets see a photo of them on then :D

Photos tomorrow.

I'm just struggling with a warix flange that really doesn't want to stop seeping water out of one of the fibre washers. I'm still vainly hoping that it'll stop when it swells enough...

Fingers crossed :)

The replacement header tank is in, and full, supply for cold side of pump is into it, supply for hot water tank is into it, and nothing's gone wrong so far...

Just about to flush the pipes out...

Youve said it now!!!:D:D

everytime i say something like that the job goes downhill from that point!

Yep, spoke too soon. The ****in washers on the warix flange are plain daft. There's less than half a millimetre of washer keeping everything watertight, and I couldn't get 'em watertight.

Bought some larger washers, filed out the internal diameter to be nice'n'snug, and fitted those. Sorted.

Now I've just found out why the previous toilet was mounted on a piece wood bolted to the wall: it's 4cm too far into the room!

Just trying to find a waste pipe that actually doubles back on itself by 4cm. Sheesh.

Nick.

fibre washers seem to work better after they get wet

Nick, IRC you can get flexible waste pipes, that may work!

chiark
06 January 2003, 10:15
David, it was soaking, and fully expanded, and still not sealing.

Went back to the place that I bought the flange from, it's a common problem... So why not include decent washers in the first place, or warn people???

Steven,
Bought a flexible waste pipe, but it isn't going to work as I wanted it to, because it needs to bend back on itself by 5cm in a very short space... So I'm moving the toilet to the side of the waste and going that way. I'll box and tile off the visible bit for neatness - plus it means you won't burn your knees on the radiator whilst struggling to extrude something...

Everything's now plumbed in and watertight. All solder joints good, one small problem with a compression joint isolator valve feeding the toilet... Of course, it would be the ONLY thing in the bathroom that wasn't able to be isolated without turning off the cold water. *sigh*

Had a tiny leak on the a waste joint (push fit) due to a piece of swarf being trapped in the o-ring. Serves me right for thinking "ahh, it doesn't really matter"...

Had a bath last night. It feels good to be clean again :D

Nick.

Thought i could smell something:D

You going tonight?

chiark

To be frank, if I don't get tiles on tonight Lyndsy might very well kill me :(

She might look placid and friendly, but.... ;)

She could always come along for the "break" from the bathroom thing.

I personally would leave it a couple of days, just to settle down, and observe for any leaks after a few days of full use, just to be on the safe side, before you start tiling.

Far better to resolve leaks now, than after you have tiled:eek:

IMO of course, not that you could use that as an excuse for going tonight:rolleyes:

Yeah, we had a leak from the shower yesterday when first giving it 3 bar of pressure. PTFE tape solved that. I do want to check that it's really tight before tiling tho. It's been like that for over a day with no leak, so I'm hoping if it's not leaking yet, it won't leak in the future...

if your burying (sp)copper pipe in plaster or cement, I would wrap it in plastic first...

Naah, it's in a partition wall so I've cut the plasterboard off, and have made the replacement panel out of exterior grade plywood, as recommended by the Word According To Collins ;)

Will unscrew tonight and check everything is dry before attacking the tiling.

Took some pics last night again, but the pictures are on the camera which is at home. "D'oh"

A colleague noticed my hands today and wondered if I'd been fighting with a thorn bush... Soft as ****e office boy hands...

Quick update back on topic:

- waste sorted out properly (supported, plus lubricated properly)
- basin waste fixed on bed of silicone
- weeping joint on shower sorted (hopefully! it's now a bit late as i've started tiling!)
- 2 m^2 tiles up

Tonight should see a straight run on tiling, and hopefully basin screwed to wall and toilet fixed to wall. Tomorrow or thursday's job: grouting... I don't mind grouting, but cleaning the stuff off is a PITA.

And yes, I'm using waterproof cement and waterproof grout seeing as it's a pretty powerful shower...

She *hates* it. Loathes it. Complains bitterly that I deliberately leave it all over the place. But yes, she'll do it :D

cheers for the offers of help chaps, we'll see how they get on, it's starting to come together now, joiner finishes tomorrow, sparky on Friday, and then just the plumber next week.

(then the plasterer comes back to fix the hole I put in the ceiling when boarding the loft :( )

Cheers,

Greg
