just sold my type-r......wondering whether or not to but an escort cosworth, or another type-r. obviously very pleased with the scooby, but how does a worth compare-----anybody ever owned both??
obviously you would have to go for a worth with the smaller turbo (less lag) and a lot of engine work, to make it perform the same as the scooby??

kungfu..so you don't get totally biased replies....suggest you post same question on RSOC bb.

PS will cost you less than £500 to get an Esc Cos chipped and a decatted exhaust, for it to perform better than a scoob. Or even buy one that has been modded

Wasnt there a Clarkson TV program where he took the fastest 10 modified escort cossies and raced them down an airfield. Then he took the winner and raced it round a track against an unmodified TypeR scooby and there was nothing in it....

..............which was a complete setup. If you put the Stig in one of them two and Tiff in the other, the Scort would be gone! In a none setup race of course.

Get an STI four door. They're better than the Type R's on bumpy UK roads and you get ABS as well. As for the Cosy, well, the only advantage it has is an engine that can take higher power more easily (only really relevant if your wanting to go 350 bhp plus). The Impreza is better in every other way with 'even' a standard UK car being rated more highly by magazines such as Performance Car in 1998. Against an STI there's really no competition.

I forsee a great future for this thread.

Anyway, do you want a past icon thats had its day or do you want something contemporary that people can identify as "the car to have" and not be mistaken for a max power boy with a bodykit on their 1.1 escort?

Should this question not be in the FAQ section? Does search still work?

Redkop, so it will cost less than £500 to get an Escos up to above the 276bhp of a Type R then will it? If so, that is bloody cheap.

My type-r had a full exhaust system and dump-valve, with a vf 28 turbo (rather than the vf24) for more top end boost. I have 'tried' my car against other sti's and ordinary wrx's, which i worked with hands down. I also 'tried' a couple of M3's, one which was chipped....i worked with these easily, although after 120 the BMW walked away ARRGH!!
Just the other week a friend of mine bought a blue escort worth...totally mint!! When we went out the road there was nothing in it till about 100, then he went passed me as if i was stopped...never seen a car take gears at that speed like it. Undoubtably he has a lot of work done on the engine to get this performance (and it isn't nos)....so how good a car are they with this power, and how much ££ to get them there ie a chip couldn't get that much out of it....

Dan the Man, that was a complete setup

There is no way a standard Type R scoob is as fast as a 400bhp escort cossie.

Simple Fact.

PMSL @ this thread going nuts.

LOl i genuinely believe the images of scoobs has turned to a boy racers car and that of cozzys is becoming more of an enthusiasts car, very weird world we live in, the local boy racer park consists of loads of scoobs, yet cozzys show up at track days far more then scoobs, only saw a few scoob ON the track at donno (loads parked up watching) on sundy, yet loads of cozzys having a go

cosworth = More potential if you wish to go down the modding route at more reasonable costs. £1500 should see a reliable 330bhp car that will waste scoobs. The Escort will also be cheaper to own as it wont devalue like the scoob. Avoid the small turbo car and get the big turbo version.

If you want to leave things alone then go for the scoob.

Thats my 10 pence worth anyway.

i personally think the eccy cos-werther original is a serious car. who does'nt acknowledge one as it drives past, other than indignant scoob owners et al?

might as well drive one first to satisfy your curiosity, check a scoob too. see what you reckon.

always fancied a cossie myself - father warped my mind as a youngster with a savage v6 2.8 turbo tecnics 4x4 estate sierra - evil blo0dy thing, Quaife straight cut 'box - good for 90 in second gear i do not joke !!!

IMO escorts are not good. I have drove a few, and just dont like them. Build quality is crap, there is no room inside, I do not find them enjoyable to drive, and they are all but impossible to insure, especially here in Northern Ireland. They are seriously overpriced, although should hold their value.
I have only ever been beaten by one escort cosworth in a race ( straight line only racing ) and it had modified head, cams, big turbo, injectors etc etc...I have raced de-catted, and chipped cars, and can only say they were slow.
Some subarus are very slow as standard, and simply do not have the claimed 280bhp that they are supposed to Most UK cars are more consistent in how they perform. If you get one that actually does have the power, then it should easily outperform an escort.
I'll give an example of a couple of local cars that some people may think are quick. Im sure you will have seen them, or smelt them. K7 LLA was the reg along with their other cars. They may rant and rave about how much power they have, but ask them how many times they have been beaten by a mini???? And I mean passing them like they were sitting still.
Some cossies are quick, there is no denying it, but in no way are they cheap to run. They do have their problems as well, and they will cost money to fix. As for reliability....they are still a ford remember.
If it was a 4wd turbo car you are after, then IMO a subaru is hard to beat as an all round package. Of course, mines a legacy estate which is even better value.

Fair enough....the cossie i raced had bigger injectors, bigger turbo, head and bottom end done and different pistons etc.....
Is this however, the only way you are going to get a cossie to outrun a scooby?? (apart from the driver that is!!)
The wide arch thing appeals to me.....but a 22B is way over the top for money at the minute (i'm only 21)....so it looks like unless buying a cossie which is graham goode tuned or something.....i'd be better off with another type-r......eh

Very bored

Some of these threads are in need of some ridiculous rantings and banter to liven them up though.
