Just been trying to sort out my girlfriend's brother's PC - it had been refusing to start windows, even in safe mode etc.

Looked to be some kinda of graphics driver problem (corrupted driver database or similar), since he'd been trying to get Championship manager running, and had installed all manner of (wrong) graphics card drivers (I know you shouldn't, but he didn't have a clue what he was doing).

A fresh install of windows to another directory worked, but would soon fail after a few boots.

As it turns out, I noticed some odd thing on c:\ and it turned out to be infected with a virus. Downloaded Sophos and ran it on (another ) fresh install of windows, how many infected files?

713!!!!!

in 8 different virus types

Currently disinfecting everything, deleting others, etc - don't want to completely start again, theres a fair amount of Uni work of his on the PC...

Just makes you realise how bad things can be for people who don't have the sense/knowledge to *NOT* open dodgy email attachements.

When Nimda first hit (and I mean _before_ anyone, including the AV companies knew WTF it was) we had STACKS of machines with 20,000+ files infected for totals of over 2Gb per machine.

Only option at the time was to debug the F***ing thing myself and keep sending updates to the AV boys....

Beat you We had a server come in a few weeks ago with over 128000 copies of the old Ethan virus. This was out of 150000 files. I couldn't fix a load of them due to the fact that they were password protected either!

Oh well......

Cheers,

Nick
