XP Product key update

OK here's one for you...... although probably not exactly legal...

How do you change a product key on say Windows XP ?, friend of mine installed XP Pro, and got a dodgy product key, he's now bought a pukka copy, and as it was a dodgy one prior to this isn't able to install service packs. He's managed to update c:\windows\system32\$winnt$.inf which does contain the product key, but when attempting to update the service packs it still fails stating he is still using an invalid product key.

He doesn't want to have to rebuild it etc, he's hunted through the registry but cannot find anything.
