I'm really keen on this idea and I'm prepared to do the ground work.

The Rosyth ferry solution attracts me for the convenience - as detailed in the thread on SIDC. If others are interested but want to get there by another means though, that's fine.

I see my scope as being limited to; identifying ferry times, hotels, Nordschleife opening times etc. In other words, there'll be no money up front or commitment. I'm just trying to gauge interest here.

I'm thinking along the lines of ...


Take Friday off work
Get to Rosyth mid afternoon
Arrive on the continent mid morning Saturday
Get to the Ring and have a few laps on the Saturday
Social evening on the Saturday night
Full day's driving on the Sunday
Social evening on the Sunday night
Head for ferry on the Monday morning (via shopping opportunities)
Home Tuesday afternoon


For information, IMHO this (http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/) is an excellent resource for all levels of Ring info.

It's also worth trawling for John Felstead's in car vids in 'member's gallery. If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll find the post(s) and provide a link.

Anyway, I'd be grateful if you could indicate you interest here. :)

I don't mind where the ferry leaves from but since my folks live not too far from the ferry terminal in Newcastle that's why I thought about there!

WRT sleep, I'm going to struggle on for another hour. If I go now, I'll be 'eyes wide open' at four. Half three / head on pillow should see me ok 'til I try to ignore the alarm at 06:30 :(

Ok folks,

Bit of a side step here, but could any of you tell me what the ground clearance is on these ferries? With the mota being pretty lo i`d often been put off the ferry ideas with the prospect of ripping bits off the underside of the mota :eek:

if the Elises get on and off OK, then you would have no problems. We also had no problems on the IOM trip with clearance for any car, and if it looks like there will be a problem, then they normally have planks of wood they can use to alleviate any problems.

I know a guy with a Diablo sv who has to reverse onto ferries so you should be ok no matter what :)

Richard & Kim who attended the IOM Bash in a Lotus Elise S2 used the Rosyth ferry on their way back to Switzerland. Here is the quote from his e-mail

For those who haven't been on the Rosyth ferry yet, it's a must! To start with, they actually seem to care about sports cars and take extra care getting them in and out. Secondly the rooms are amazing. So is the view as you go under the road and rail bridges.

ever though about going as a passenger/co-driver, instead of driving your own car.

I'm sure there will be quite a few people in the same category as myself, who almost always have an empty passenger seat, and wouldn't mind someone to talk to on the way there and back, especially if they chip in a little bit for the fuel costs etc.

On the Catalunya trip (now that really is a hoot!), everyone shares cars, fuel costs, ferry costs, driving etc.

John - WOuld certainly keep the co-driver/passenger option open. However would still have to get Skye sorted out as it wouldn't be enjoyable for her. Only managed a few nights away from her (TT2002 and SE Camping trip up North last month) but even arranging babysitting for those couple of nights was hard (She is not that bad !!) Would enjoy the Ring as a passenger on first visit anyway. Could then make my mind up whether I would want to take he Elise over another time.
