When is Finland in the calendar?

What's the nearest town and hence airport?

jon44w
06 November 2002, 01:15
The nearest airport is Helsinki mate. The date is 8th to 10th Aug 2003 :)

Catalunya has been moved to October 24th-26th this year :( but I think we`ll go again as it was so good last time :)

Cheers Jon.

Plenty of time to find some cheap(er) flights then...

Mate would you believe that BA and BM were charging me £400+ return compared to Scandinavain Airlines at only £127 return! ( all be it via Stockholm )

Mmmmmmmm. Tough decision there. If I can get 3 other mates to commit to Finland the cost will come to £400 each. Thats everything except food. Accomodation is a motorhome and thats 5 nights in Finland too. Bargain.

Driving through town with the stickered up cars was a laugh cos all the locals were cheering them :D:D:D

Oh dear, I've just been reading up the 5 day motorhome option for Finland. The Visa card is getting hot already!

That said, the hotel option sounds good, as does the extend trip so you can drive some of the stages yourself.

:rolleyes: :D :D

Here Chris, as we are from NI we have to fly to England from Belfast. Our SAS flightleaves from Heathrow so out of Stansted / London Luton which is the best airport to fly to? Or I mean which is the easiest to get to Heathrow from. I dont want to fly direct to Gatwick or Heathrow as it costs a minor fortune :(

Scoobychick

Luton is easier to get to from Heathrow, it's a bit nearer than Stansted. However both are a motorway journey from Heathrow. I think there are shuttle services operating from both to Heathrow.

Heathrow to Luton: M4 ---> M25 ---> M1

Heathrow to Stansted: M4 ---> M25 ---> M11

Map here: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=525000&Y=215000&A=Y&Z=6

You'll see Luton on the left and Stansted is on the far right just off the page near Bishops Stortford, Heathrow is a way off the page to the South(ish) west! :D

Chris and Sal,

I just read in MSN that the calendar hasnt been confirmed and there is a chance that the dates can still shift. Something to do with boats and machinery haulage??

Best not to book anything yet then until we know for definite whats going to happen.

John.

Last year we flew with SAS and booked the tickets through Lunn poly, the tickets were something like £162 each return this was the cheepest we could find at the time.
Transfer was in Copenhagen to Helsinki where we had a hire car booked.
This has got to be the best round of the WRC and well worth the effort to go.

John,

You won't find too many really cheap flights to Finland. Most of the time you are stuck with the "expensive" airlines like Finnair, BA, KLM, SAS etc. However, sometimes they have okay rates as well.
SAS has usually fairly okay rates via Stockholm.

The nearest airport actually is Jyväskylä, which is also the rally HQ city. However, as far as I know that airport is domestic only (I could be wrong) so you'd have to fly via Helsinki anyway. Jyväskylä is about 3-4 hours from Helsinki by car or train. Rental cars are typically rather pricey in Finland.

Hotels in Jyväskylä need to be booked well in advance for the rally week.

I've done the trip from here (Rotterdam) to Finland by car several times. If you have 2 or more people it can end up being cheaper than flying as well (Especially if you don't have to rent a car while there). Driving up to Stockholm can be done in one (very long) day and then you take the ferry over to either Turku or Helsinki. It is also possible to do the drive up in two days and have an overnight stay in Denmark or southern Sweden on the way.

(I'm Finnish so that explains why I'm there almost every year.)
