Matt, your finally paragraph pretty much sums up what I was trying to say, but a touch more politely, are you sure you're a biker:)

I wouldn't mind betting money that the ones riding like tits on a weekend are the same ones you find Driving like tits during the week, usually in a BMW

Matt & CrisP

I get your point, and thanks for making that point a bit more welcome ;)
one fact that keeps me in check,is that i have more responsabilities now than i have ever had,ie a two year old ,who i very much want to see grow up, i am still cautious on the bike, cant get my knee down, would like to say ive done it,but to me it is not the be all and end all,i enjoy biking, and get more satisfaction from going round our twisty roads smoothly than going everywhere at 150MPH ! when i first past my test i was going to go down the bandit/monster route, then talking to dealers most came up with that old nugget"itll only go as fast as your wrist will take you" so ZX6 it was, i took it so gingerly for about the first 2000miles,then as confidence grew started to build up the speed, and i can honestly say that i have never driven like a Tw@t,and dont intend to!

i know the type of bikers you mean although most up here have 996s,and spend most of their time pootling down the seafront!

TO illustrate this point, Someone I work with bought a brand new Harley in August, Born again, not ridden for 25 years. Sat on it in the show room and promptly dropped it before he even had the keys. Said bike has not been ridden in 4 weeks and will sit in the garage until next summer when it will be ridden down to the local wine bar (to arrive in style !. I asked him if he was going to the Bike show at the NEC and he said 'Harley Davidson Worcester sell everything I need, Bike shows arn't my scene'.
He's 45 and Drives a BMW normally but isn't overweight. Oh also , he was using an open face potty for a couple of months to match the image until he realised the peak wanted to rip his head off above 60 mph and leathers spoil the image so he doesn't bother with them either.
For what he spent on the Harley, He could have almost any other bike on the market (and I'm not impressed with the build quality)

D Noble:- Have you joined up with the www.mcnninjas.co.uk (http://www.mcnninjas.co.uk) site yet ?

D Noble :- Good tip for the MCNNinjas site, Go into your E-Mail settings on the site and change them to either
1)read them on the web, or
2) send a daily digest to my email address

THe site has about 700 posts a week and it will spam you mailbox big time if you go for the recommended 'email me all the postings'.

BTW what name have you joined up under ?.

There are quite a few scottish Ninjas on the site (look in the locations sections), Organise a rideout (weather permitting), And get yourself booked on a track day at Knockhill next year, It shouldn't be more than £80-£100 It really is a top experience and well justified. The only thing is you won't want to ride on the road again.

One of the fastest road riders I know is in his 50s with a heart condition  He's not fat though. 'Born again' about 5 years ago I think.

Doesn't do knee down just leans it (alot ;) ) and is fast and smooth.

I struggle to keep up with him and I'm rarely passed on a solo ride, so I don't consider myself slow.

The trick to riding really fast on the road is to 'ride it like you stole it. Its amazing how much progress can be made with a death wish, The down side is that you will either kill someone or get killed yourself. There is a time and place for everything and experience is more important than age. One of the quickest riders on the road I know is always coming off and put me on crutches for 6 months. He is very quick on the track as well but takes stupid risks.

Blimey I'd forgotten all about this thread:D

Written a well before I became the eponymous 'Fat Middle-Aged Guy on a Motorbike' obviously:Suspiciou

Now I've seen the view from the other side of the fence, I have to say, riding a bike smoothly down a good twisty road ain't all that difficult:thumb:
I've even been able to manage it over here.

Is there no room on the roads for people who just enjoy riding, who dont feel that they're every bit as good as Velentino Rossi, who know they dont have the lightning fast reactions of their youth?
I'm getting on in years and started biking around the age of 12 (private land), went production racing on a Bonneville, blimey that dates me, used to ride to and from the circuits as I was a penniless apprentice. Was pretty good too!
Never got passed on the road in those days. However we all slow down and I cant get my knee down, I ride safely and with experience. Is that a problem, do I have to ride like a lunatic? Surely not. Dont deride us old codgers, we're bikers too we should stick together before it all gets banned......

Congratulations! You win the most pointless post of the thread award!

"Don't get me wrong I'm a biker" Nope, don't see the connection. What the Hell does Joey Dunlop have to do with this? The man was killed racing in Estonia, not out for a jolly with his mates on the Cat and Fiddle.

I'm glad to hear that riding a streetfighter makes you immune to people pulling out in front of you. That's a neat trick. Is it a bolt-on extra you can buy from the back of BSH? Or is it perhaps that now you're 44 you've realised you're not immortal and spent some time improving your riding and situational awareness?

Personally I don't see a streetfighter as any more of a 'proper' bike than any other home made lash-up. Remember most of them started when people lobbed their sportsbikes down the road and couldn't afford to replace the plastics. Some of them are very well made, of course, but plenty of others aren't.

Now I ride everything - it goes with the job - and I watch a lot of other people riding, too. There are good riders on all sorts of bikes. And guess what. There are not so good ones on all sorts as well. What the hell does it matter what someone rides or what they wear? We've got enough people from outside taking pops at us without starting on each other.

So please, see if you can add something constructive rather than being a sanctimonious (look it up) twat.

, either learn to ride the fcuking thing properly, or learn some manners and get the fcuk out of the way of people trying to pass

Why should he get out of you way. If a vehicle is that slow then you can find a way to pass in good time.
Last week 5 of us went for a little run but with one guy who only passed his test three or four months ago so rather than burn off and risk him killing himself trying to keep up we spent most of the day meandering along at the speed limits. How upset a car driver can get being stuck
behind a load of 160mph bikes plus 1 bandit all doing 60. D)

You're right. I'm off to take the fairing off my TL, add a universal twin headlight kit out of the M&P catalogue and don a Simpson Bandit and camo pants.

Enjoy riding your streetfighter and leave me to enjoy what I choose to ride. And learn to spell ridiculous.

Quite right mate, if you cant pass another bike safely and easily then he shouldnt be on the road.

It's called manners;)

If you are all just ambling along at the speed limits, fair enough, that does indeed present plenty of overtaking opportunity for a car driver:thumb:

The type of rider my original post was aimed at, is the sort who gives it full throttle up every straight section, then stands it on it's nose at the first sign of a corner, you know full well that it's nigh on impossible for a car to out-accelerate, and therefore overtake, even a relatively slow motorbike (I mean, my '78 CB550 will keep up with my scoob, and that's hardly a quick bike) in a straight line, this leaves the car driver getting more and more frustrated:(

The reason I resurrected the thread was because I now have a bike licence, whereas when I started it, I didn't, and as my post says, I am still failing to see what's so difficult about getting a bike down a good road smoothly:wonder:
