A m8s got a 96 Legacy twin turbo, and in conversation he mentioned that he would like to get hold of some `carbon composite` brakes

Questions for the technically minded,
1, What are they

2, where can you source them

3, approximate costs

Also anybody who has modded rear brakes on the legacy, could you please let me know what you`ve done, and I will pass the info on..

Ron, these are specialist super-high-performance racing brakes, as used in F1 or GP bikes (they've been banned from Superbikes to keep costs down).

AP-Racing make them, they cost a fortune and don't work unless VERY hot Useless on a road car, even if you could get them to fit.

You can get carbon metallic pads for use with standard iron / steel brake discs, it'll be this what your mate was talking about. They're made by a company called performance friction I think.

They work well on our historic mini which is limited to 7 inch non vented discs by the regs as they keep working until really silly high temps without fading. In fact they work so well that we have melted wheel bearing oil seals and caliper seals while the brakes still haven't faded. For scoobies with big vented discs keeping the pads working to this sort of temperature is presumably less important so it may not be the best pad for this application.

As others have said the carbon/carbon brakes as used for F1 (carbon discs and carbon pads) are not practical for any lesser applications than F1 or Le Mans type cars.

 

F60 has them all round and they are 380mm, though are damn expensive to replace a whole set of pads & disc upwards of 8 grand.....and will last around 6k miles......thoguh the last bit is still to be tested on uk roads....

AMG have also got an upgrade to ceramics........
