It tends to take a little method sometimes to get it to flame.

When we had the prototype of these a few years back, it involved a little experimenting with plug gaps, and throttle technniques.

Okay, so my car's a cossie, but the best way I found was to drive the car loaded, not freewheeling, then accelerate sharply up to say 5k, then snap OFF the throttle, and let the car run....

The car normally burbles when you do that, but now it'll be flaming. Other times are approaching a roundabout at slow speed in 1st with quite high revs, or downchanging for a corner.....

Get on a dual carraigeway, with armco on the left, and stay on the inside lane. If you try the aforementioned technique, you should see a nice reflection in the armco barrier, but please look where you're going in front!

I have held flames for over 60 secs, just by feathering the throttle, but if you blip the throttle as the revs are dropping, it'll pop a mini fireball out the back!

Just takes a bit of time for the plug to get a little coated too....

Hi Rich - long time no speak since 05:00 in the bar at the ring :D

I've tried various techiques: heel/toe to blip the throttle, double declutching, big revs then letting them drop, but to know avail.. I widened the plug gap too..

I'm a little disappointed to say the least :(

Do you think the cat in the downpipe is making the difference ?

..may have something to do with it :(

I think it's one of those things dude, some scoobs flame like a ******* by just decatting, others need a VTA, others need octane booster. I really think that it's a case of finding your cars needs. Mine didn't used to to much until i cleaned my air filter and took the resonator box out.
Don't ask me why or how, it just did. So mine does do a few flames without anything novel, but the car has to be hot and I wanted the flames without having to stress the car (Loads of Revs with no load)
Anyways, oooo's still up for a bit of cheap fun, let's be right about it, compared to most mods, this is bloody cheap. It costs more to buy two bits of carbon to stick on ya MY02's nose or get ya grill done or even buy 1 tyre.

I have a type R with a HKS RS induction kit, Scoobysport down pipe & rear box but I have a Power Engineering centre section wiv a sports/high flow cat in it..........would I get flames still when using this kit or do I have to have a straight through centre pipe?

Oh and I have a Link ECU fitted to, will this make any diff? fuel etc?

ok, I've been told to give it about 2 days to settle down b4 the flames comes

BUT

after 5 mins of driving BANG!!!!!!!!! the whole back of the car lighed up while gear changing from 1st to 2nd. I didn't believe that it was what I thought it was so I tried again and !!!BANG!!! more light then from the street lamp :D:D:D:D:D:D

Well I think it does work, now I just have to wait those 2 days and see what the settleing will do :D

stiscooby, Im expecting it to work on mine: TypeR, Blitz filter, Full Scoobysport Decat and Link. In fact when pushing the car hard I get flames on overun already. And thats with the original dump valve.

stiscoby - sorry mate any cats in the car will prevent you from getting flames....

You must have:

1. full decat system
2. Vent to atmosphere dump valve
3. doh.... flamer kit

Hi, have a few questions:

1. Where does the spark plug go? Just behind the backbox?
2. Is there a gromet for the HT lead to pass through already or do you have to drill a hole in the floorpan?

You dont need a VTA dump valve if you are not running the standard ECU. Your Link map will provide the extra fuel without the VTA Bleed.

VTA valve + decat xhaust + air filter = you need that to get flames without the flame kit.....

I would say that if your car doesn't produce 100% clean fumes (you wish) even with cat on there you should get flames out with the kit,

BUT why dont you call SCC Performance (http://www.sccperformance.co.uk) and ask them !!!!!!!!!!!!! Dough

Maxy, the spark plug goes about 4-5 inches in from the end of the tail pipe. If possible and you may need to remove the zorst for this drill it at 12.00 o clock that way its almost hidden from view. And you may just want to paint the white part of the plug with some black high temp paint (or wait 2 weeks tll its filthy)

The ht lead is situated in the sopare wheel bay and subaru-geniuses that they are must have known flamer kits could be put on have placed a 2.5 inch rubber grommet in the floor pan, so no drilling required!

Hol, you won't burn the bumper whilst travelling forward, though it will get very hot when parked up and showing your mates!!! So don't flame more than several times, then allow to cool.

Perhaps carry some water & an extinguisher-you never know!!

P.S If it's not your cup of tea and you think it's a sad thing to do to your scoob, then we hear you. Individuality it's called ;) and i promise that 20 odd scoobs with flamer kits are not going to devalue your standard car or be responsible for the image of the Impreza driver hitting an all time low! honest :D Afterall, BMW's don't tend to have flamer kits, loud exhausts, big spoilers,etc and see the image that we think they have ;)

Hey I fitted mine on the weekend as did AndyP and we went on a flaming session through Tadworth :):):) muchos grins.

Anyway it looks as though you could get away without any welding, just screw the spark plug through the pipe and into the threaded washer. It takes longer to run the battery wire than to actually fit the kit, which could be done easily in under a couple of hours..... and even without VTA dump valves we had flames when giving it large.

I'm ordering a VTA as I speak to increase the flame factor.

So heres how we fitted them:
1 Unbolt 2 bolts holding backbox to mid pipe
2 Pull backbox off the rubber hangers (HINT use fairy liquid)
3 drill a 13mm (or slightly larger) hole in tailpipe
4 push sparkplug through hole and tighten onto threaded washer
5 refit backbox
6 place coil into spare wheel well (fits nicely next to wheel)
7 connect HT lead through rubber grommet in boot floor
8 connect up wire via switch from battery
9 wire up earth lead to lights earth in boot (8mm socket)
10 flick switch for flames, EASY MAN
