View Full Version : Farewell XR600
gooser 10 January 2002, 17:39 Thing is, Hornet is a lovely bike, but no range and the rubber on the back is too expensive for me to replace. Would I get a Fazer for that price with those miles (plus its got a Spyball and FSH)?
Not keen on the Beemer, but you're right, I do need it for commuting but need to have fun at weekends. Budget fun? Wish I was rich.

gooser 01 October 2002, 13:38 OK, b*stard thing took about 20 minutes to start this morning with a combination of kicks and bump starts, and I really can't put up with that now, let alone when it gets really cold. So, I've seen a V 00 GSX600F for £2995. I know that people don't rate them coz they look weird, but what I need is pro's and cons from anyone that's ridden one, or knows anything about them.
Let me know.........
cookiemonster 01 October 2002, 16:19 they're pretty duff - i had a good look a few years back and went for a second hand cbr6 over the gsx. Very very glad i did. They have nothing on their side - dont handle, dont make any power, not comfortable, questionable build quality.
At the end of the day if you're after a fully faired 600, get a cbr; if a budget 600, then a hornet or fz600. If you just want a mid size bike for commuting then go for a bmw f650s (better all round bike than the gsx)
:)
cookiemonster 01 October 2002, 18:23 if its mainly for commuting and you want something thats cheap to run, then really - go try an F650 (or the 'priller pegaso, coz its pretty much the same bike) My wife had one for a year or so and i used to use when it was wet or doing the commuter run up to town. It was ace.
It runs out of steam at 80 - though it'll go on to 115 or something, but in the 20 - 70 range it's great. You can really lever the bars over and get it into corners, and on anything really twisty it would embaress the sports bikes. I'd rather have a hornet, but i'd take an f650 over the gsx6 any day.
gooser 02 October 2002, 09:26 Ta mate, might just have alook on Biketrader for them then.
Tim Bomford 02 October 2002, 13:25 I had an XR600 for about a year. Once you "learn" how to start it they are easy to get to go every time......but until then very frustrating! I know where you're coming from, not fun especially if you have all your gear on.
Was a real beast for green-laning and I still miss it.....oh and the noise;)

gooser 02 October 2002, 13:32 Know what you mean Tim, thing is the carb is a bit dodgy, particularly the choke - which is inoperative, so as the weather is getting colder, it's impossible to start even with the right technique. Gitta get something with a choke an electric start. Luxury.
Tim Bomford 02 October 2002, 13:59 Ah I see, you never mentioned the lack of choke!

Sphyncter 03 October 2002, 23:00 Gooser, get the beemer, you know you want too
Lee.
gooser 04 October 2002, 10:13 Picking up the GSX next Saturday. Took it for a good 15 mile test ride, and didn't think it was too bad. Wallows a bit on corners, but it was like riding on air compared to the XR. Having mirrors and seeing 120 again was a nice novelty. Took the XR as p/x and seemed blissfully unaware that it needed a new carb and rocker gasket. Also looked at a ZR7, but went for the Suzie coz it looked like a banana boat.
gooser 04 October 2002, 10:16 Might just wobble up your way Lee. Once I've learned to ride without my feet on the ground. :)
Sphyncter 04 October 2002, 16:20 It would be nice to see you gooser. Mebbe we can meet up halfway sometime. Enjoy your GSX, you'll be selling it soon :D:D:D:D

gooser 04 October 2002, 16:28 Give me 3 months to find a few faults with it.
All this negative equity I keep ending up in would have bought me a 996 by now. Which may have been light enough for me to keep enough speed up to stop wobbling.:):):):)
Elmer Fudpucker 04 October 2002, 22:30 gooser mate,
xr600's were never intended for road use.(i absolutely love 'em)
i don't see how you can compare it with a 4 cylinder suzuki road bike????
....if you like the 'off-road styling' with road/touring capabilities.
perhaps you should consider the honda africa twin?
