Some things are better left to the experts :( my alloy welding efforts (must try harder)

carlos_hiraoka 26 September 2002, 21:41 Andy could u post a picture of the turbo, with it's inlet and discharge pipes ..... ?????
SMG 26 September 2002, 22:03 Have to start calling you handy Andy mate, throttle body looks
good, il be the first to hold my hand up and say im no welder, but i found half the battle was having the correct rod, just out of
interest i found 10% silicon rod good for the cast stuff like manifolds and heads etc.... good luck.
Steve.:)
David_Wallis 27 September 2002, 10:16 Andy, How have you done the throttle cable... and how do you find the room for these pipes
David
Andy.F 27 September 2002, 13:11 David
I used half the original bracket upside down, drilled and tapped new holes in the manifold. See pic above :)
The manifold spacers give me loads of room ! Turbo inlet 80mm (I think). Discharge 63mm.
ustolemyname??stevieturbo 27 September 2002, 13:29 Dont forget his manifold is about 30m higher than standard, which does give a bit more room. Still wouldnt want to lose my PAS though.
David_Wallis 27 September 2002, 14:15 30M  I dont want to loose PAS... Makes belts easier though..
Can you do us a close up photo of the bracket??
You not bothering with the water feeds to the throttle body??
David

Andy.F 27 September 2002, 18:21 Mmm, water feed to the throttle body  what ? and heat up that air i've just spent ££££ s getting cooler :D :D The turbo acts as a nice pre heater so don't think I'll have any iceing problems :) (that's why it's there)
No close ups of bracket yet but will get tomorrow.
Turbo pics for Carlos

Standard 90 degree compressor housing top. Just cut off the bend and fit a supply to it.

David_Wallis 27 September 2002, 19:33 You could have told me before I fcuked around with the pipes... :D
David
Moles Dad 27 September 2002, 20:43 Respect to the DIYers :)
David_Wallis 29 September 2002, 11:18 Taken a photo of the bracket yet andy?
I need to get in the garage... (Not been in, in ages )
David
Andy.F 29 September 2002, 18:24 Ere you go
http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/getpic.asp?File=2002929181914748272.jpg
ustolemyname??stevieturbo 29 September 2002, 19:36 Why didnt you just turn the manifold round?? Then the entry would have been on the front anyway, and since you dont have any PAS, wouldnt have to worry about the ISCV hitting anything? Then the throttle linkage etc would work as normal.
UkLegacyT 29 September 2002, 20:05 i always thought the bonnet wouldnt shut with the isvc at the front?
Andy.F 30 September 2002, 00:13 The angle that the throttle body comes up at on the early manifold would hit the bonnet. As Ian says, the ISC valve also sticks up too high :( My manifold is also raised on spacers so it was a definite no no !
On this front entry mod, I've also angled the throttle body downward slightly to reduce the pipework angles to the intercooler.
Adam M 30 September 2002, 10:03 it doesnt hit the bonnet if you reverse the manifold. even the early one.
it might if you have raised it up using spacers under the manifold and I am guessing due to the clearance on your turbo that you have.
David_Wallis 30 September 2002, 10:23 I wish the fcuker that welded my plate on had welded it on at the angle I asked for... mine points upwards slightly...
How much longer before your done do you reckon??
David
Andy.F 30 September 2002, 16:28 it doesnt hit the bonnet if you reverse the manifold. even the early one.
Adam - My ISC valve did  even without spacers it would have needed about 30mm.
ustolemyname??stevieturbo 30 September 2002, 17:37 You could get someone to machine yours David, to change the angle??
And re above....it might if you have raised the manifold...has someone been sleeping??
If you are thinking of another early car that runs a reversed manifold, there is no ISCV fitted.
David_Wallis 30 September 2002, 17:44 not worth the hassle, might as well just make some pipe work with bends in...
Oh well might get my self in the garage tonight and update my thread...
David
Andy.F 30 September 2002, 18:20 Steve, Yawn.... I raised the manifold on spacers.....but before this  I tried rotating it and the ISCV fouled the bonnet by approx 30mm IIRC the 5th injector hit also :(
Do you think I LIKE welding alluminium :D :D
David_Wallis 30 September 2002, 23:21 http://upload.turbosport.co.uk/gallery3/200242383749442255.JPG
Andy.F 01 October 2002, 00:34 Looks like your alternator is too high also ;) :D
ustolemyname??stevieturbo 01 October 2002, 01:18 It doesnt actually sit like that, does it??? Or are you thinking of putting a Nova/Corsa style power bulge on the bonnet??
David_Wallis 01 October 2002, 10:33 LMAO @ Andy (Not at his joke :D)
That is how the inlet sits when turned around on mine!
94' Uk 5dr (no spacers... just gaskets!)
Bonnet bulge on my alloy bonnet, nah!
David
Adam M 01 October 2002, 13:24 andy,
myu experience comes from mark aigins car which has no isc valve.
if you are going to be running a decent ecu anyway, why not just remove it?
then it would fit!
Pavlo 01 October 2002, 14:53 Adam,
I think you will find the throttle body angle has also been changed on Marks manifold, which is an ex group A item I believe. In addition hasn't it also been extrude honed or something similar?
Paul
Andy.F 01 October 2002, 15:16 It might fit without spacer and without ISCV but the throttle body would still be at the wrong angle :(
Wot you on about anyway ? I've already got a decent ECU.....JECS :)
carlos_hiraoka 02 October 2002, 21:04 any more pictures ;) ..... ?
Andy.F 02 October 2002, 23:19 Not yet, just carved up my bumper today  still waiting on Samco hoses :(
