I've never had one, so i dont know whats involved in buying one, what i can ride as soon as i pass etc..
Firstly how do i go about taking the test?
As soon as i pass whats the max cc bike i will be allowed to ride?
And how long do i have to ride/keep or be passed before i can get the a higher cc bike?
Whats the best bike to get for a first time rider?
All comments appreciated! thanx

I'm currently going through this at the moment. Basically the route you take depends on how old you are and how long you want to ride a 125 for..
Basically which ever route you take you need to pass the CBT (Compulsary Basic Test) + and the theory.
I did a day on a 125CC and passed the theory test earlier this week.
As I'm over 21 I can take the Direct Access route which is basically a course on a 500cc bike, then I pass my test on a 500cc which allows me to ride anything once I pass.
If you take your test on a 125cc you have to ride around on a 125 for 2 years before you can ride anything over that capacity.
I don't know yet whether the test for a 125cc is the same one as that for a 500cc bike after you've completed the direct access course.
The only issue with the DAS route is the cost. I'm looking at paying something around £600 which basically allows me to ride until I pass ~ no time limit. If I fail the test I can continue with lessons for no additional fee.

Tests should be about 50 squid and last approx 30 mins.
Test consists of:
eyesight test
Ride for 10 mins
pull over
emergency stop
push bike round in road
u turn (on bike)
10 mins more riding
back to the test centre for pillion questions
At least it was back a few years ago.......
Tests usually are booked up 4-6wks in advance.

Just done mine - test is longer (well it was for me in Guildford). 15 minutes riding, then u-turn plus emergency stop, then further 20 mins on various roads. But basically as previously stated. Depends where you are regarding waiting time. If you do a Direct Access then the school will get the test slot for you at the end of the course. I failed and retook but managed to get a test exactly 2 weeks later (10 working day wait is compulsory).

If you take your test on a 125cc you have to ride around on a 125 for 2 years before you can ride anything over that capacity.
IIRC you are not limited to capacity but by horse power. You have to ride a bike with 33hp or less for 2 years if you take your test on a 125
