You can join the two green connectors under the steering column/dash and turn the key in the ignition (dont start engine)...

They will be under there some where... this will make the solonoid run constantly until you turn the key 'off'

I think it is the green ones someone else may be able to confirm...

HTH

Question

Anyone know how to clean the solenoid valve?

I've sprayed some brake cleaner in both holes, but it doesn't come out the other end.

Think i may have to connect it up to the 12v but how would i do this?

Cheers,

Mark.

I've found one green connector, but the only other loose one i can find is black.

Bit cramped under there so can't really see properly!

I've got two blacks and no greens, if you know what I mean
You can, alternatively, do it by filling the hoses and driving the car.

Just had another look for the green connectors before i read your replies and found it, so connected the two greens together - this turned the fan on and the solenoid started ticking, so sprayed some brake cleaner in on end and it came out the other.

Still got overboost though, so not sure what to do now!

Cheers anyway,

Mark.

Have you ckecked the pipe from the turbo to the boost solonoid, if it is cracked anywhere the car will overboost... i take it you dont have a manual/ electronic boost controller on your car....

Do you have a boost gauge fitted...???

And are you sure its not fuel cut or do you mean you are getting fuel cut due to overboost...!! fuel cut car be caused by other problems i think...!!

If all else fails i would get it on one of them select monitors to see where the problem lyes...

Haven't got a boost controller or guages, so that doesn't help.

Experiencing fuel cut but subaru and someone on here said it was overboost, but may be wrong.

Will check all the pipes tonight.

Cheers,

Mark.

Yep - I thought it was overboost. Description...
What happens is every now and then when i put my foot down, it starts to accelerate, then just loses power completely and i nearly hit the windscreen (normally around 2500rpm but sometimes higher).
So cuts out at spool-up. 2500 a bit low (!), but cutting out at 3k would be about right. I can't think of anything else that earns the 'windscreen' treatment

Yeah, it's even worse if it happens accelerating in 2nd gear! Nearly broke my neck!

So am i right in thinking the only other thing it could be is the pipes?

Can you drive around it or does it hit the fuel cut everytime you accelerate; even gently?

If it's all the time your wastegate may be stuck.

No, from a standstill, i can floor it in every gear...only seems to be when i'm hanging around 2500rpm then accellerate hard that it cuts out, so accellerating gently is fine.

I drove 360 miles at the weekend and didn't cut out once!

Whar car have you got mate.... there was a thread on here a bit back explaining that some of the cars if left in second gear for a certain amount of time, would fuel cut to prevent damage to the drivtrain....!!!

It's a UK 98 Impreza turbo.

It only cut out in 2nd gear a couple of times though - mainly happens in 4th and 5th.

When you get chance have a look at the pipe from the turbo to the solonoid (same diameter pipe as the pipe you have been cleaning with brake cleaner... and check it well...!!

If it has no cracks then it could be a turbo wastegate problem......

But before you spend loads of money i would buy a boost gauge even if its only a cheap one... this way you can see what is happenng with the boost.....

Unhappy

Checked all the pipes last night - no cracks and cleaned them well, but still same problem!

Booked it in to Power Station next week so hopefuly they'll find the problem.

Are you using a fuel cut defender and a dawes device?

Are you getting fuel cut on part throttle as you put your foot down?

Unexplained fuel cuts have been cropping up here and there, and I think it may be due to the fuel cut being at different levels of boost depending on throttle position.

Try and see if it will cut out during spool up with full throttle, so you may have to start at a lower RPM to ensure that the turbo doesn't start spooling up as you put your foot down.
Then try holding at 3000 and give it about 1/3rd throttle, if you get some serious part throttle boost, and it might trigger a fuel cut.

I am still not 100% sure on this, but it seems to fit in with what's in the ECU, and what a few others seem to experience.

Haven't got a fuelcut defender or dawes.

Will give that a try later though.

What will this mean if it does trigger a fuel cut?

As it only happens when when you hang around 2.5k then you accelerate I'd suggest that you try a different size restrictor before giving it over to PowerStation.

It's got to be worth a try before you spend any more money, it'll cost you very little and take you around 10minutes max. I can't remember if you should go up or down a size though, up I think but you'd need to check.

This is strange though if the car's standard, I always thought that the ECU had an emmissions routine that it run if the throttle was held around 2.5k then planted, it would hold back to produce low emmissions but it would never feel like fuel cut. The way around this was to take your foot off momentarily then re-apply.

Keep us updated.

Mo,

Dumb question: what and where is the restrictor?

doesn't sound like the fuel cut i was referring to, I had in my ind it was a 93wrx, but that was someone else.

The restrictor is a small round "thing" with a small hole through the middle. It sits in the end of a hose somewhere between the boost solenoid and the wastegate actuator.

It restricts the flow of air to the actuator, if the hole is too small, or gets blocked (easily possible) less pressure is available to the actuator and this raises the boost. Over a time period (say a second) the air can flow throught the restrictor and open the wastgate, but if blocked you may have already overboosted by then.

see here for more details.

I assume you only seem to get this in 2nd?

Does it only do it if you hold revs in 2nd (say 2500 revs for 10-15 secs) then just floor it?

Does it still do it if you hold revs in 2nd - blip throttle on/off - then floor it?

Only asking coz this sounds a little bit like the infamous - emmision/noise restriction thing only found on the later (post 96) ECUs?

There was a thread on this a couple of months ago.

Just an idea?

Cheers,

Chris

Cool

Took my car to powerstation today and they've sorted out the problem.

It was a blocked pipe, which i must have missed when i checked them all!

Anyway, there were a few other things that were reducing performance which they've also sorted (and raised the boost a little! ) so that was cool.

Thanks to everyone that helped

Cheers,
Mark.
