Thank you all. Slightly disappointing on the transmission and internals front then for what I am looking for. I'll see what the rumoured STi is like, but if it comes with uprated brakes, gearbox and presumably internals, then that will be a nice base on which to work. A H6 3.0 twin turbo would be nicer still, but that appears to be improbable rumour land.

Legacy B4 RSK manual - vaguely wondering about as a replacement for our 406 3L V6.

Nice car, subtle, just a bit heavy for the amount of power, but that can be remedied... Just wondering about a few issues - How many cats does it have? Are there replacement exhaust bits to remove them? Any one know what the primary and secondary turbos are? How do the engine internals compare to an STi 5 or 6 - ie will it take big power as well as an STi? How good is the standard intercooler and is there room to fit a FMIC? Do the clutch and gearbox take the power well? Need to find out if I can remap it with Ecutek too Is there a new Legacy B4 I heard rumoured?

Obviously it needs some decent stopping power presumably AP or Subaru 4 pots would fit on the front under the std wheels?

Mr. Banks (I take it that is the current accepted way of addressing you ),

A bit of info on the next one and forthcoming B4 STi here:

http://www.apexjapan.com/

Coupla short answers to your q's: STi 3 block bolts in, but the internals and other bits are NOT STi grade. 1 cat in the primary down pipe, and one in the centre pipe. There are quite a few centre pipes available here with sports cats (metal honeycomb) and I believe Pete Croney has a centre+back box exhaust, too. FMIC possible, APS do a unichip, so I guess ecutek is possible (looking forward to seeing the number you get ). Gearbox is as on WRX, as is the clutch (ie at the sort of power these engines run, pretty much maxed out). Stoppers defo do better after some TLC - 4pots being a common first stop, but the STi7 Brembos fit too (just thought you'd want to know ) - as do STi7 wheels (as long as you don't lower the car afaik).

turbos vary accross the 4 versions...

phew...c'mon, we'll cya at the B4 group then

Hi John

As AJ said, we do make exhaust parts for them. Apart from the centre and rear, we also make a downpipe section that picks up from the secondary turbo. The OE downpipe is a Y shaped unit with the two branches bolted at flanges. Our DP leaves the primary DP alone, with its cat, as it seems to like the back pressure.

The effect of this is to get the second turbo spooled up a bit quicker, filling in what Legacy owners lovingly call "the valley of death". This is the power void between both turbos.

Internally, its an STi block and bottom end, with high compression pistons, other than that, identical to an Impreza.

There is plenty of room for a FMIC and it would be a worthwile addition, as the bonnet design does nothing for airflow into the tmic.

Clutch and gearbox are Impreza spec, unless its a tiptronic.

The turbos are very small, but work OK.

John saw one of these on thursday night at the northwest meet, was a lovely looking car and i think the smaller turbo kicks in first then the bigger next, but the guy who owns it is called Matthew but dont know what his name is on here
